Uncle John’s Band -> Space -> Wharf Rat -> Around And Around - Grateful Dead
5.11.77 - Civic Center Arena, St. Paul, Minnesota

I love these songs immensely, so when you put them all together it really does it for me.  I should note that often Space just doesn’t do much for me.  I can get way too lost in a 10 or 15 minute version of space to really keep sight of any theme or emotion the band is trying to hold. (Which is interesting consider my deep love for all things Dark Star… essentially space, right?)

Yet this version of Space clocks in just under five minutes and has this incredible two minute guitar solo - nothing else - from Jerry that simply melts face.  Ripe with feedback it segues perfectly into Wharf Rat, and is likely to send chills up your spine.  Around and Around closes things up hard and fast with a really blazing rendition. What a perfect way to end a show, and just another reason why 1977 is a tremendously positive year of Grateful Dead music.

What Is The Butter Room?

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
