China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider - Grateful Dead
1.3.70 - Fillmore East, New York City, NY
One of may favorite versions of this classic combo. Enjoy!
Inamorata - Miles Davis
12.16.1970 - The Cellar Door, Washington, D.C.
This selection comes from Miles’ legendary sessions at The Cellar Door at the end of 1970, which produced one of his finest works, the live fusion album Live Evil. Just as Davis did with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and a host of others, these sessions propelled many relatively unknowns into superstardom in the jazz world. Joining Miles for these shows are Keith Jarrett on keys, Gary Bartz on sax, Jack DeJonette on drums, Michael Henderson thumping the bass, Airto Moreiera tending to percussion, and the ever-astounding John McLaughlin.
At time time (and perhaps even to this day), many of Miles’ fans loathed these shows and the fusion direction in general, due to its stark contrast to his earlier work in an acoustic format. Yet within these shows lies some of the most interesting improvisation of its day. Jarrett breaks from his usual instrumentation to light up the Fender Rhodes electric piano and organ, while McLaughlin often slants his solos with feedback and a dirtier tone that bring Jimi Hendrix to mind.
Perhaps most notable about these sessions are not just the brilliant and creative playing of some of the best jazz musicians of the past half century, but the genius that Miles himself brought out in others. His personality, musical knowledge, and appetite for driving collectives down unknown roads is a legacy few have ever begun to scratch the surface of.
Long Time Gone - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
6.5.70 - Fillmore East, New York, NY
Here’s a great tune from CSNY’s six-night run in June of 1970 that was later compiled into the live release, Four Way Street. Crosby, Stills & Nash will be touring throughout the summer beginning in June. Neil wrapped up his spring U.S. tour at NOLA Jazz Fest last weekend, and will embark on a tour of Europe beginning May 30th in Barcelona.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
