Morning, Freaks!!
Well this one ought to keep you busy for a little while you nurse the nastiness left over from last night’s fun time. Without a doubt ’73 and ’74 are my two favorite years. I’m not going to get to in to the specifics of the songs today, but I will say that if you don’t listen anything else in this show , listen from Eyes>Weather Report in the second set (damn nice structure on this one) and the mesmerizing Truckin’>MLB jam>Spanish Jam in the third set. Jerry’s on and he knows it.
What is Hip? - Tower of Power
5.14.74 - Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NY
One of my favorite genres of music is funk. Funk seems to have a lot of different connotations for different people. However, if I had to define the funk I’m a fan of most, I’d direct all interested booty shakers to this band and this song. If you’ve never heard Tower of Power, or only remember that Balco roidster Victor Conte played bass for the group in a later incarnation, then sit back, hit play and be prepared for uncontrollable funkgasms.
Mystery Train - Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders
11.10.74 - Palace Theater, Albany, NY
This is the second post we’ve shared in the past week from Albany’s Palace Theater, this one coming 18 years before Phish played their ‘92 own November show. It’s hard to believe that both of these two greats are no longer with us. Enjoy this wonderful cover of Elvis Presley’s “Mystery Train.”
Stella Blue - Grateful Dead
2.23.74 - Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA
1974 is probably my favorite year of The Grateful Dead. It’s unique in that there is only one drummer (Billy K), and finds the band at the peak of their original musical aesthetic defined from 1965-1974. The band’s future also had a great deal of uncertainty surrounding it due to mismanagement of their assets by a corrupt manager, huge expenses due to their experiment with The Wall Of Sound, and general frustration that after ten years and having established a loyal following the band could not make a comfortable living doing what they loved.
In the midst of all the chaos, the band played a number of spectacular shows in their familiar Bay Area stomping grounds at The Winterland. The band would close the 1974 tour with a 5 night run from October 16-20 there as well. These shows feature the band playing at their emotive peak, and are well documented as part of the Grateful Dead Movie. This Stella Blue comes from a great two night stand in Februrary. For me, Stella is the ultimate Jerry ballad. It’s beautiful, full of soul, and Hunter’s lyrics really speak to you.
Bruce Springsteen, Blinded By The Light, January 29, 1974
I’ve earlier written that 73-74 were golden years for Springsteen, where at a time before he was a rock god he was willing and able to play songs with an inventiveness that was gone as soon as 1975.
Here is a version of Blinded By The Light unlike anything you, or I, have ever heard before - with a 6 minute instrumental beginning that can only be described as Bruce meets funk. Weird, random, and totally hot.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
