Possum - Phish
5.17.92 - The Achilles Rink, Union College, Schenectady NY
This popped up on the party shuffle yesterday, and I instantly knew it had to be my Phish pick of the week. As I was researching the show, I found a classic review on phish.net from 92mdb@vax.cc.williams.edu posted on May 19, 1992. Here is a snippet about the Possum:
POSSUM!!!! I could write my music theory final on this one performance alone. Ok: start off with some good old fashioned fun. Just a touch of goofing around (trey and mike were running around the stage). Then add the language: D’OH!! Fall Down!! Grab wrist and yell “aw fuck.” Then start sampling songs; begin with “Rocky Mountain Way (there’s your mental block, Dave!)” Then add LA woman. Now get fishman to stop that 16th note rhythm, and start the song. Keep playing LA woman over that. Somehow, get thru verses 1,2 and chorus. Now blow everyone away with an unbelievable solo and light show. Solo: start by sampling china grove (doobies) right off the bat. Now noodle for a while and stick the lick from It’s ice in there (yep, trey
sampled his own stuff!!). Now build it to pre-orgasmic levels. Then to orgasmic levels (see, I told you it fits into alt.sex). Now do one of those build to the really high note runs, and end on a high note for divided sky solo. Now play that melody. Then build it up to ultra orgasmic levels. Then somehow take it higher. Extraordinary. I have no more words for it. One of my friends said, “What was with the jammin possum?”

Rooster - Alice In Chains
12.20.92 - Seattle, WA
I was checking out our Q&A with Sam Wilson of Sons of Bill from earlier this year in preparation for a full band Q&A this week and noticed that one of his influences is Alice In Chains. Gotta like that, especially from an alt-country band.
You Enjoy Myself - Phish ft. Carlos Santana
Stowe Performing Arts Center, Stowe, VT
This is one of my all-time favorite YEMs and a great way to kick off your weekend. The peak of this is just massive with both Santana and Trey tearing into it. Still takes my breath away every time I hear it.
Glide - Phish
3.20.92 - The Forum, Binghamton, NY
No joking around today, this is a stellar Glide from a high energy, early ‘90’s show. How about the song selection? My jaw would drop if I saw half these songs played in the same show!
1: Wilson, Reba, Brother, Glide, Rift, Fluffhead, Maze, Lizards, Mound, Run Like an Antelope
2: Mike’s Song-> I Am Hydrogen-> Weekapaug Groove, Sanity, The Sloth, The Mango Song, Cavern, Uncle Pen, Harry Hood, Terrapin*, Possum
E: Lawn Boy, Fire
Thanks for the request @jrmcdowell13!
Fast Enough For You - Phish
11.20.92 - Palace Theater, Albany, NY
On Wednesday, Phish.com reported the sad news that Trey’s sister, Kristy Manning, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer:
She was one of Phish’s first fans and biggest supporters. In recent years, Kristy helped form and lead Trey’s non-profit endeavor, The Seven Below Arts Initiative.
Kristy was a loving sister, mother, wife, daughter, friend, and a role model for all. Her positive attitude, strength of character and continued outpouring of love and support left a profound impact on everyone she knew.
She will truly be missed.
The Butter Room sends its sincerest condolences to Kristy’s family, and particularly Trey. You’ve been through a lot over the past few years Big Red, but your friends, family, and devoted fans have and always will continue to stand beside you. Stay strong, and know that we’ll be at be cheering you on 30 days from now as Phish’s first summer tour since 2003 kicks off.
I’m a sucker for Blues Image covers. Thanks to JB for pointing this nugget out last month.
Here is something a little different for Grateful Dead Sundays from the Georgia Theatre. Most live music fans know about the fire that destroyed this classic venue earlier this summer. You can help with the rebuilding efforts by donating to the cause on the Georgia Theatre website.
Black Sabbath - Widespread Panic
10.31.92 - Georgia Theatre, Athens, GA
Far be it from the heat to ever turn down a challenge, but this time I am going to have to concede to the fine gentlemen of the Chicago TBR. Due to a clusterf*ck of a schedule over the past week, weekend and today, I admit defeat. It sucks, I know. It was such a simple challenge. The potential for Phish Halloween (this year, the Ocho) to be darker, scarier, and dirtier than Panic Halloween. Really, Chicago?…Really? Kids these days?!? Go Home, Hippies.
Just the mere grit from JB’s throat and the dark bottom from a Schools bass line should be enough to stand alone in triumph.
That being said I will take my loss with grace this go round.
ROUND 1: Chitown
(p.s. As time permits through the day today I will do my best to post some video dirt from Panic’s past. Happy Halloween to all!! BOO!!!)
Y’all welcome, Mrs. Hutto!!
Way back when, Indecision was my second favorite band behind the Dead. I was in college, things were loose and carefree, and my only responsibility was to see Indecision or New Potato Caboose on the weekend at New Horizons Café in Richmond. They rotated weekends. Well, Indecision started to blow up all over the southeast, and gave WSP, DMB, From Good Homes, Dillon Fence, etc. opening spots on a regular basis. This show was one of the last I saw before they went on hiatus. They were kind of at their peak musically at this point. There are some true gems in this set, the fan favorite I’m Not From Here, a jazzy Charlemagne, a hot Bu, signature Little Bit, and a fun Chicken Pot.
Anyway, I know this isn’t on the schedule, but I hope you like.
Yours in musical companionship ,

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
