Bathtub Gin - Phish
8.13.93 - Murat Theater, Indianapolis, INI’ve noticed we haven’t been giving 1993 much love, but it may be the most technically precise year of Phish. This Gin is not only a glowing example of why 1993 was so amazing, but shows off the improvisational bliss that has been featured year after year in this jam vehicle! Listen for the Weekapaug teases at about 8:20 and the totally synced eargasm Trey and Mike bring at 11:45 before slowing it down! This one goes up there with the likes of Real Gin (12.29.95) and Went Gin (8.17.97) as an all-time great.

The Wheel - Grateful Dead
6.11.93 - Buckeye Lake Music Center, Hebron, OHBuckeye Lake was one of the Dead’s favorite venues for outdoor shows in the Midwest. Sadly no big shows take place here anymore, but Dead concerts such as this one add to the lore behind the venue. Estimates of its capacity range from 40-60,000, with some of the biggest and most famed lots of the early 90’s adding to the mystique. While this show may not have a mind blowing setlist, it’s full of sublime gems such as this one.

Fluffhead - Phish
5.6.93 - Palace Theater, Albany, NYThis is one of the songs rumored to be on the band’s list of songs for Hampton. It’s widely believed each member of Phish brought a list of songs they’d like to play to the table for rehearasal sessions that started perhaps as early as October, and that these songs will comprise the setlists for the three return shows in two weeks(!!!). What songs will be busted out? What surprises do they have in store? The anticipation is starting to come to a fevered pitch as the countdown ticks closer.
This Fluffhead comes from a first set performance that ends with a string of bluegrass tunes, including Lawn Boy with Dick Solberg on fiddle. View the full setlist here.

Rift Promotional Video - Phish
1993Mr. Miner put together a great article this week celebrating the 16th anniversary of the release of Rift. Rift was my first Phish album. I bought it 16 years ago, but to be honest, it took be a couple years after that to really get into Phish. Boy, was I dumb back then. Anyhow, I hope most of you read his piece, and caught the promotional video that was included at the end of the post. If not, here is the video and the article can be found here.

Joe is a member of a “Power Metal Band” from Tampa, First Born. Check out their myspace page and have a listen to “Born to death”, “Death becomes her”, or “Red pain blood drain” or better yet just listen to this 20 minute treat from Tampa in ‘93.

Phish At The Roxy (Atlanta ‘93)
The next release from the Phish archives will focus on the group’s three-night stand at Atlanta’s Roxy from February 19-21, 1993. Like Phish’s Hampton Comes Alive and Island Tour releases, At The Roxy will showcase the run in its entirety, boasting almost eight and a half hours of music. In addition to choice versions of many Phish classics like “You Enjoy Myself,” “Fluffhead” and “Mike’s Song,” the set features appearances by local heroes Jimmy Herring and Rev. Jeff Mosier, a humorous version of Kiss’ “Rock And Roll All Nite” and no less than three “Hold Your Head Up” Fishman routines.
Like many performances from this era, Phish’s 1993 Atlanta run boasts both a “Big Ball Jam” and a “Vibration Of Life” segment. Other left field selections include “Have Mercy,” “All Things Reconsidered,” “Esther” and Jon Fishman’s rendition of “Memories.” At The Roxy is the first archival Phish release to document a full pre-arena performance since the original Live Phish series.

I had a mild crush on Kim (something about female bass players) and their second drummer, Zach (featured in this video) is still to this day the only drummer I’ve seen to break his sticks while counting off. Rock!
