Queen Jane - Grateful Dead
6.18.93 - Soldier Field, Chicago
Fifteen years ago today, I caught the Dead during my first ever trip to Chicago. What a trip it was. The Bulls were in the middle of their 3rd straight NBA title. On the night of this show, the Bulls and Suns were playing Game 5 in Chicago. The sound crew mixed in several live audio clips of NBC’s call of the game. You can hear Marv Albert after the end of Queen Jane. At set break, the game was broadcast on the big screens. Setlist.
The Grateful Dead w/ Sting opening at RFK Stadium
6.26.93
Fifteen years ago today, I saw my first show at RFK Stadium. It became an annual trip until Jerry died in ‘95. Here is a photo during Sting’s opening set, which was better than the Dead’s that night. Jerry came out to play with Sting during the last song. I wish I could find that tape!
I’ll be posting some audio from the Dead 6.26.93 performance tonight.
Space Wrangler > Walkin’ - Widespread Panic
4.17.93 - Guilford College, Greensboro NC
“Space Wrangler is something you can listen to again and again. You want to see the band live, to see how they extend it, how they improvise, how they morph it. Businessmen are eager to eviscerate the soul from the music. But, musicians insist on keeping it in. Not listening to others tell them how to do it, but following their own muse. That’s why we’re fans. That’s why we keep going to see them. It doesn’t begin and end with the recorded take, that’s just a jumping off point.”

ff=66 - Jawbox
4.26.93 - Koz Uni-Campus, Frankfurt, Germany
Jawbox was without a doubt my favorite band starting my senior year of high school and throughout college. I had a mild crush on Kim (something about female bass players) and their second drummer, Zach (featured in this video) is still to this day the only drummer I’ve seen to break his sticks while counting off. Rock!
The next release from the Phish archives will focus on the group’s three-night stand at Atlanta’s Roxy from February 19-21, 1993. Like Phish’s Hampton Comes Alive and Island Tour releases, At The Roxy will showcase the run in its entirety, boasting almost eight and a half hours of music. In addition to choice versions of many Phish classics like “You Enjoy Myself,” “Fluffhead” and “Mike’s Song,” the set features appearances by local heroes Jimmy Herring and Rev. Jeff Mosier, a humorous version of Kiss’ “Rock And Roll All Nite” and no less than three “Hold Your Head Up” Fishman routines.
Like many performances from this era, Phish’s 1993 Atlanta run boasts both a “Big Ball Jam” and a “Vibration Of Life” segment. Other left field selections include “Have Mercy,” “All Things Reconsidered,” “Esther” and Jon Fishman’s rendition of “Memories.” At The Roxy is the first archival Phish release to document a full pre-arena performance since the original Live Phish series.

Setlists from this epic three-night stand:
Worth a listen for the Heavy Metal Jam alone. Who is Joe Rooney you ask? Joe is a member of a “Power Metal Band” from Tampa, First Born. Check out their myspace page and have a listen to “Born to death”, “Death becomes her”, or “Red pain blood drain” or better yet just listen to this 20 minute treat from Tampa in ‘93.
Mr. Miner put together a great article this week celebrating the 16th anniversary of the release of Rift. Rift was my first Phish album. I bought it 16 years ago, but to be honest, it took be a couple years after that to really get into Phish. Boy, was I dumb back then. Anyhow, I hope most of you read his piece, and caught the promotional video that was included at the end of the post. If not, here is the video and the article can be found here.
Fluffhead - Phish
5.6.93 - Palace Theater, Albany, NY
This is one of the songs rumored to be on the band’s list of songs for Hampton. It’s widely believed each member of Phish brought a list of songs they’d like to play to the table for rehearasal sessions that started perhaps as early as October, and that these songs will comprise the setlists for the three return shows in two weeks(!!!). What songs will be busted out? What surprises do they have in store? The anticipation is starting to come to a fevered pitch as the countdown ticks closer.
This Fluffhead comes from a first set performance that ends with a string of bluegrass tunes, including Lawn Boy with Dick Solberg on fiddle. View the full setlist here.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
