This Part of Town - Widespread Panic
11.27.99 - Hampton Coliseum, Hampton VA
Widespread Panic’s only performance at Hampton Coliseum included a guest appearance by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band at the end of the first set and during the encore. In fact, the “Coconuts” with DDBB to close set one is on Another Joyous Occasion.
I decided to feature the debut performance of “This Part of Town” from this show, which was eventually released on the 2001 album, Don’t Tell the Band. Panic has not returned to Hampton Coliseum since this 1999 performance, but they make a point to visit nearby Portsmouth every summer at the NTELOS Pavilion. One of my all-time favorite Panic shows is from Portsmouth, which I will chronicle in a future Being There post.

Ten years ago this week was the legendary three day Phil & Phriends run at the Warfield. Phil Lesh was joined by Steve Kimock, John Molo, Trey Anastasio, and Page McConnell. If you haven’t seen this vid before, it’s about an hour and forty minutes long with highlights from the first night (4-15-99). It includes “Viola Lee Blues”, “Big Railroad Blues”, “Row Jimmy”, “Shakedown Street”, “The Wheel”, “Not Fade Away”, and “Mr. Tambourine Man”.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
