String Cheese Incident
April 25, 2000 - 9:30 Club, Washington D.C.
Phish - 9/17/2000 - Merriweather Post Pavillion, Columbia, MD.
This is one of my favorite The Curtain With versions. Quite a good “With” and wonderful show at my hometown venue taboot.
That version was from Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD, I recently returned to Merriweather for my first show there of any kind in over 5 years. It was a different experience but it was very nice to see Matt from The Butter Room as well as some old friends who I had the pleasure of meeting at Merriweather 8 years ago for the first time.
Merriweather was not the best show for the boys of Phish in 2009, no one will argue with that, but none the less, they had their moments of phunky fresh face melting without a doubt. I personally enjoyed every second.
I had my wife Gretchen along for her 3rd show and my good friend Brad along for his 2nd show. Neither of them had been to Merriweather before. Its such a nice venue (albeit with crap lots because of cops) to see a show at. Merriweather has been a mainstay in my life and I’ve always had great luck meeting new people there who I always seem to maintain a friendship with.
This time I got to share it with almost everyone I could have hoped for.
String Cheese Incident is back for one show this weekend at Rothbury. Stay tuned to From the Road for live updates from Rothbury.
Bathtub Gin - Phish
7.10.00 - Deer Creek, Noblesville, IN
23 days until summer tour, and I’m still in no position to even declare a definitive “most excited for” show, which speaks to the potential for this tour. Fenway. Asheville. Bonnaroo. The Fox. Star Lake. Creek. Alpine. Red Rocks. Gorge. Every night this summer will be filled with so much potential to amaze and bring together a community that hasn’t danced on a warm summer evening together in nearly five years. Deer Creek though? With only one night it will pack a punch, you better believe it.
Meatstick > Cities > Walk Away - Phish
06.29.00 - PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ
As requested, we cap off Phish Friday with one of the great Meatsticks. This medley has it all, including an improvised verse in ode to Pete Carini (and his lumpy head, of course) who chases several fans off stage during the song, a guest appearance by Page’s wife for the Meatstick dance, and a Japanese lyrics singalong. The Cities that follows throws a shout out to Tokyo, where the Meatstick dance has (apparently) eclipsed the Macarena fad.
For those feeling the Meatstick craze, check out the blazing Run Like an Antelope > Frankenstein that follows, complete with Meatstick teases.
Run Like An Antelope -> Frankenstein - Phish
6.29.00 - PNC Center, Holmdel, NJ
This is pure hose. Listen for the early Meatstick teases as the band powers through a blazing Antelope only to up it with a monster Frankenstein. Get your dancing shoes on phanners, three weeks until Hampton!
Twist - Phish
5.23.00 - Roseland Ballroom, NY, NY
Since the band’s mid-to-late 90’s ascension as one of the most powerful live performing acts in America, Phish has rarely returned to small venues. Your best chance in the late 90’s was to travel abroad and find them in a European theater (see: Winter 1997, Summer 1998). Many of these theaters were nearly perfect for the multi-dimensional soundscapes found in both their compositions and extended improvisation. By 2000, Phish had conquered the outdoor sheds across the country, selling out wherever they went. And for this reason, when Phish announced four small shows following Big Cypress (their largest live performance to date), fans scrambled for a way to get themselves into an intimate atmosphere. The band’s shows didn’t disappoint, and of the four theater shows, Roseland may pack the biggest punch.
The Fox Theater show will be Phish’s smallest performance since the Roseland, and to say I feel blessed to have - miraculously? - scored a ticket along with fellow Butter Room contributor Euphonic Brew is an understatement! I have a feeling this summer tour is going to be phenomenal.
Dog Log > Mango Song > Jam > Free - Phish
9.17.00 - Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia MD
My Phish pick this week is from the last show I saw before the first hiatus. :)
First off, I love “Dog Log”, but the jam out of “Mango Song” is pretty unique, very spacy and bassy. The end of the jam and the transition into “Free” reminds me of the Grateful Dead’s nightly transitions out of “Space”. Enjoy.
Indifference - Ben Harper & Eddie Vedder
10.13.00
Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
This one from my YouTube favorites seemed appropriate on the eve of the ‘08 DNC. I tend to avoid party politics, but at the same time conservatives tend not to make good music.
From the archives: “Ben played solo acoustic along with a host of special guests to support Presidential candidate Ralph Nader. The program included speeches from actors/activists Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, actor/comedian Bill Murray, filmmaker Michael Moore and other special guests.”
São Paulo Slim - Supergenerous
Sometime in 2000, SESC Cultural Center, São Paulo, Brazil
Supergenerous is Cyro Baptista on any number of percussive instruments and Kevin Breit on guitar. This song is fantastic, but if you’re not a fan of “out-there” percussion and vocal loops, feel free to skip ahead to about 3:00 into the video where it really gets going.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
