Also Sprach Zarathustra - Eumir Deodato
Ever wonder where Phish found the inspiration for their funky version of Richard Strauss’s 1896 masterpiece Also Sprach Zarathustra? Look no further, as this live performance highlights Eumir Deodato’s orchestra joyously jamming the piece in all its glory in 1972!
Big Time - Medeski Martin & Wood
12.29.01 - Teatro Mancinelli (Orvieto, Italy)
A fantastic funk jam from the trio at the historical jazz festival in Perugia (and surrounding towns).
Having lived in Italy for five months, I was fortunate to see and experience the amazing festival culture throughout the country. Each year, every city in Italy throws several unique festivals. The tradition is, in part, a reflection of the Italian’s love for music and celebration. It also serves to upkeep the millenia-old competitions between the towns, with each trying to outdo the others in the magnificence of their events.
The Umbria Jazz Festival must win this mountainous region an annual prize, as the 10 day long music event has hosted artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Sam Rivers, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, and John Scofield (among many others) in its 36 year history. Though Jazz has evolved throughout the ages, seeing some of the modern greats such as MMW in this ancient mountain city would be a real treat. Enjoy!
Bowlegged Woman - Widespread Panic
10.27.01 - Kiefer Lakefront Arena, UNO, New Orleans, LA
You be the judge. Touted as the best Bowlegged in Panic history, and possibly one of the best performances on one of the best runs ever by the band…JB oozes on this version. Watch JB right before his rap, if you look closely you see him get “the twitch”, then my friends it’s on. Preach it, baby. He covers it all in this one…the kitty cat, Michael Jackson, the mighty Rev. Al Green, hooking up and the chase.
I knew Michael Jackson when he was just a little man.
Three Little Birds - Trey Anastasio & Dave Matthews
2.28.01 - The Landmark Theater, Richmond, VA
I love live music because you never know what you’re going to get. This is one of those examples. After Strange Design, Dave came on stage to a thunderous crowd. They settled in to play acoustic versions of Everyday and Three Little Birds. Nice!
The Butter Room will be at The National in Richmond, VA this coming weekend (10/25) for the Trey show. Be sure to check back here after the show for exclusive content.

Ashes of American Flags - Wilco
07.04.2001 - Grant Park, Chicago
All my lies are only wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
Ashes of American Flags contains some of the most powerful lyrics ever written by Jeff Tweedy, which we have come to expect. I realize this is a rather bleak tune to post for Independence day, but what the hell.
This show was a rather eventful one. It was Jay Bennett’s last. It also appears in the 2002 documentary, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, which chronicles the making of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, where you can observe the tension between Tweedy and Bennett leading up to this show. Bennett ended up leaving the band in August.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
