Der Bluten Kat - Umphrey’s McGee
5.16.02 - Schuba’s, Chicago, IL
I came across this gem in my library recently from a show when Umphrey’s was just a local, up and coming band. While there have been some great versions of DBK over the past few years, this is an excellent version from a younger, more raw incarnation of UM.
Rebirtha - Widespread Panic
06.28.02 - Red Rocks, Morrison, CO
Today marks the anniversary of Mikey Houser’s death. The “silent genius” had a huge impact on my life personally, and I’m sure many of you, too. He was confident, without ego, kind-hearted and genuine. His goal wasn’t to be the frontman lead guitar player for Widespread Panic. He was just the humble guy who sat in a chair, fan blowing in his hair, melting faces with a volume pedal.
This vid is from the the Red Rocks shows in ‘02, which was also my last run with Mikey on lead. He would play only a few more shows with his buddies and pass a couple months later. We all knew Mikey was sick and in pain, but still laying out every inch of his positive energy for us. Watch as JB walks over (around 2:40) and hangs out with his best friend.
I will forever miss the “lingering lead”. R.I.P. dear friend.
Shoot First - All Thumbs Trio
12.6.02 - Starr Hill Music Hall, Charlottesville VA
All Thumbs Trio was a three week side project for three great guitarists: Johnny Hickman from Cracker, Chuck Garvey from moe., and Gibb Droll. Three acoustic guitars, nothing else.
I am going to post a few songs from this show today, each one sung by a different member. First up is this moe. cover.
35 Minute Jam - Phish
12.19.02 - Victor Disc Sessions, NY, NY
The Victor Disc was recorded while the band was in the city preparing for an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. After midnight in a downtown Manhattan recording studio Trey and Page called Gordo and Fish to join them for an improv session.
Occurring shortly before the return of Phish 2.0, the session produced a very jazzy, light, and atmospheric portrait of four guys on no particular musical mission that night other than to produce something fun that provided them with rich opportunities to interact musically. Titled on the recently released Victor Disc as “35 Minute Jam,” this is really a series of jams strung together. Anastasio revs up the jam with a bluesy tone that invites Page to dig into the Baby Grand while Fishman and Gordon maintain a pulsing backbeat to all of it. However, Cactus leads the band back down a more introspective path until near silence. What emerges is a slow, sublime Mike-led jam into some very melodic areas.
It becomes apparent around the 25 minute mark that you’re actually eavesdropping on a very intimate conversation between four old friends just reconnecting and catching up. There are many of these moments on the Victor Disc, ones which relay the secret behind Phish’s success: their improvised musical conversations are mesmerizing.
Ed and Molly - Particle
7.4.2002 - High Sierra Festival, Quincy CA
I am going to post a couple nuggets from past Independence days. High Sierra festival kicks off tomorrow. I’ve always wanted to go!

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
