In honor of the Mike Gordon contest here on The Butter Room, I have decided to share my favorite Mike story. The show started with Soul Shakedown Party and we knew it’d be a fun night. Back in Vegas 04 it was setbreak and we were just waiting for the phish to come back and melt our faces. I was sitting with another Butter Room resident, Matt, and we were talking to a guy from Colorado I believe. We brought up how fun it would be if they opened set 2 with The Meatstick. So we decided we should start doing the meatstick dance. We were seated on the floor, about 5 rows back in the middle, but more towards Mike’s side.
We got a small group up and started doing it, then a section just above the walkway to the stage on Mike’s side started to do it, then many other people at the Thomas & Mack started to do it. It was the dance craze that swept vegas that phine night. Phish came out on stage, and I don’t know how he knew, but he looked right at us on the floor doing the dance, and he gave us a nod, then they started to get phunky.
Much to our delight, later that evening, Trey, Mike & the crowd had a Meatstick reprise within a wonderful YEM, by doing the meatstick dance while Fishman was soloing. Mike then took it away with a slick solo.
The blurrycam shot I have above is the only shot I have of Mike doing The Meatstick that night, and I hate to make it sound like we’re taking all the credit for the song that night, but hey, from where I was standing we started it, I’ll always think of it as our meatstick, an awesome time in Vegas where I first met Matt, and I know that Mike was one of the biggest reasons we were there.

This was my favorite night of the 6 that moe. played on the first ever moe. cruise. Moth was played in the middle of the first set, but then made another appearance in the second (which I shall put up later).
1: Stranger Than Fiction, McBain, Moth* > Livin’ Again*, Happy Hour Hero*
2: Rise > Dark Star Jam > Sweet Emotion > Meat** > Bullet > Meat > Moth reprise
E: Rebubula
* - with Jay from Nero on percussion
** - with Third Stone from the Sun teases
Bathtub Gin > Runaway Jim - Phish
8.9.04 - Hampton Coliseum, Hampton VA
This was the worst Phish show I ever saw. It kicked off an extremely disappointing week in Phishistory for yours truly. Later that week, after spending 30 hours of my life traveling five miles on I-91, I was turned away from Phish’s final shows. Phish was over. I still have not listened to Coventry, and probably never will. August 9th, 2004 was the last Phish show I ever saw, and I was bitter.
My feelings about that week in August 2004 haven’t changed, but my feelings about Phish have. Even with the ticket nightmares over the past six months, I haven’t been this excited about Phish since Lemonwheel, which was the last Phish festival that I attended. It’s a fresh start for a band that needs one. Todays New York Times article confirms that.
I’m going into this weekend with an open mind. Even though my excitement is high, my expectations are low. I don’t care what they open with, what they play, and how long they play it. I hope the output will be high quality, but it has been 4 years since they last performed (weddings excluded). I think this was part of the problem in 2004. No way was I going to appreciate the final show at Hampton unless it was a repeat performance of Hampton ‘95 thru ‘99. I mean it was the last show ever at Hampton! A set list that was peppered with songs from Undermind and Round Room coupled with the typical sloppy play from 2004, the evening was a big letdown.
Trey’s sloppiness aside, I was more disappointed in the set list that night. It was also the anniversary of Jerry’s death. Couldn’t they just pull out “Terrapin” one more time? (sarcasm here) That was my perspective then. Spoiled and weathered. When I look at the setlist from 8/9/04 now, my perspective is completely different.
Set I: Chalkdust Torture, Bathtub Gin > Runaway Jim, Walls of the Cave, Loving Cup
Set II: All of These Dreams, Limb x Limb, Lifeboy, Crowd Control, Seven Below > Stash > NICU, Bug, Contact > Character Zero
Encore: David Bowie
I would love to see this during the weekend. What about you?
In the end, this coming weekend is all about your expectations. I expect to be in Hampton on Sunday. I expect to stay in the hotel I booked two days before the announcement. I expect to not leave my tickets at home. I expect to drink a cold beer (several) in the lot. I expect to enjoy the moment. And I expect to get into the show and see Phish live for the first time in 4+ years. That’s it. Nothing more. A good friend told me a long time ago that expectation is the seed of disappointment, and I am through being disappointed with Phish.

Undermind - Phish
2004 Undermind Sessions, The Barn, Burlington, VT
Here’s an outtake from the also recently leaked 2004 Undermind Sessions; a song that Trey has played (although substantially different) with TAB. Phish never played this song, but it seems very fitting that this will work its way into the Hampton setlists at some point. The lyrics are too spot on and the song is open to all sorts of funky jamming.

Where the Devil Don’t Stay - Drive-By Truckers 08.27/28.04 40 Watt Club, Athens, GA So I guess by now everyone’s heard that Patterson went down on stage at the Music farm in Charleston last Thursday night. Naturally, speculation was that it was because he saw the bottom of the Jack Daniels bottle, but thankfully he just has pneumonia. The next couple of shows were played without him. Cooley took most of the lead vocals over, with Shonna putting out a strong effort, too. Her songs are really starting to pick up speed. We, at The Butter Room wish you a quick recovery, Pat, so you can get back to rocking our faces off. I want to wish the other half of Southern Heat, SPARKZ, a very Happy Birthday! Not only is he my little brother, but he turned me on to the Truckers. As a matter of fact, I went to my first Truckers show with you, Phatback and crew in Richmond. Ironically, I hear you celebrated his birthday with Jason Isbell this go round. Wish I could’ve been there.
Mike’s Song - Gordon, Russo and Benevento (GRaB)
12.30.04 - Higher Ground, Burlington, VT
Shortly after Phish called it quits in 2004, Mike Gordon teamed up with The Duo, Marco Benevento (keys) and Joe Russo (drums) to form a unique power trio. Here they tackle Mike’s Song with some serious intensity and a refreshing look at a nearly twenty year old song. I love the way in which the dynamic adds an urgency to this song, which in later years lost a bit of its force within the full band context. I’m excited to hear what new directions Phish takes some of their classic songs. To go back over the past five years and explore what the members of Phish have been doing, check out Hidden Track’s From Coventry To Hampton special.
Tailspin > Timmy Tucker > Tailspin > Kids - moe. 3.9.2004 - Stardust Lounge, Norwegian Sun, Leaving Jamaica Redo: I tried to post this earlier in the week but encountered some issues joining multiple tracks which resulted in a busted post. Hopefully you can enjoy all 46mins without issues. Freestyle!

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
