At Least That’s What You Said - Wilco
4.22.06 - William and Mary Hall, Williamsburg, VA
A Ghost is Bornwas released on June 22, 2004. In the weeks leading up to the release, I shared an office with a Wilco fan who constantly played the free streaming preview provided on the Wilco website. It stuck with me. I couldn’t stop listening to it. Every track was mesmerizing. It’s one of my favorite albums from this decade.
It wasn’t until 22 months later that I finally caught Wilco live. Last time I had seen them live was September 1997, so long ago I don’t remember anything about the show except that I had a bad case of PDA with my girlfriend (now wife). This time around, we had a decent sized crew descend upon Williamsburg, Virginia to catch Wilco at William & Mary Hall.
Pregame was spent at the delis. After spending the summer of ‘94 in Williamsburg, I grew to really love hanging out at the delis. I even met Bruce Hornsby at Paul’s Deli during the couple months I spent there. The Green Leafe was packed leading up to the show. A great venue for Wilco pregame. As night fell, we walked over to campus to see the show.
William and Mary Hall is the basketball arena for the Tribe. A decent sized arena, no booze served, and the show was GA. When we got there, security was no longer allowing any more people on the floor. So we settled in to some seats and watched from there. For me, the show was great. My appetite for “A Ghost Is Born” had been growing for 22 months and we were served 9 songs from the album. The crowd energy was kind of lame though, especially after experiencing the crowd at Charlottesville the next night. There were a lot of people sitting down the entire show.
I don’t have a favorite track from “A Ghost Is Born”, nor a favorite song from this show. So, I decided to spotlight the first track from the album (from 4/22/06). Dick In A Box - Umphrey’s McGee
12.31.2006 - Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL
Living in or near Chicago for most of my life, it’s always fun to take in New Year’s Eve in the Windy City. The past four years I’ve spent my NYE with Umphrey’s in one Chicago location or another. Each year I’ve been treated to wonderful musical guests including Tortoise, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, North Mississippi All-Stars, The Wailers, and Keller Williams.
On this particular New Year’s, the band treated the crowd with a humorous encore referencing Justin Timberlake’s hilarious Saturday Night Live skit of the same name (available here), boxes and all.
I’m still unsure of what my plans are for New Year’s, but if you’re in Chicago and looking for a good New Year’s show, Umphrey’s may hit the spot. Sound Tribe Sector 9 is playing four nights in Atlanta, The Disco Biscuits are playing in NYC, and out in San Francisco Les Claypool will be joining Zappa Plays Zappa while Phil Lesh & Bob Weir join forces for two nights at The Warfield.

‘Bout My Money - Outformation
09.15.2006 - Rocks Off Boat Cruise, New York, NY
So, Southern Heat had to make a super-hard decision this New Year’s Eve. Options in Charleston, SC were as follows: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Bloodkin, and Outformation. Being a rooted Panic fan, first thought was to catch Outformation on the 30th, and Bloodkin on the 31st. Love you Jason, but hate the Music Farm.
So, off I go to see Outformation the first night and I was really blown away by how these guys are developing. outformation are what’s great about Southern Rock, and keeping it alive. It kind of felt like Mike Houser playing with the Marshall Tucker Band. Back woods, whiskey drinking with a lingering lead and just enough psychedelia to keep jambanders interested, and a great tight knit fanbase of good people. It felt like I was surrounded by family like the old days with Phish and Panic.
Sam Holt is the real deal, but often outshadows the tremendous play of keyboardist C.R. Gruver(who by the way may lay down the nastiest West LA Fadeaway this listener has ever heard, outside of Jerry’s speedball years). Seriously, this guy is talent and is a nice guy taboot.
Sorry for the lame video…but look out for their new DVD “…Been a While.” to be released soon.
Get out there and support ‘em on the road. They’re playing about 150 dates a year, and I’ll bet they’re coming to a bar room near you.

Let It Sing - The South
03.30.06
Anybody who got a chance to see The South was blessed. The band was a short -lived and georgeous combination of thoughtful lyrics and strong front porch acoustic lines, based out of Columbia, SC. I always thought the band was on the verge of busting big into country radio. Think Lady Antebellum meets Union Station at the fishing shack by the river during the day, then gets all gussied up and taken out to the honky tonk for an evening of brown liquor with Charlie Daniels and Marshall Tucker. This band was going places with a full southeastern touring schedule, a constant flow of new music in the hopper, and talented musicianship taboot.
Their demise was unfortunate and sad when Chris Connor (formerly of Sourwood Honey and lead vocalist) passed on due to cancer at the end of ‘07. The guy always had a smile and something positive to say even when you could tell life wasn’t tops for him personally.
Over the years, I got to see Chris play with different bands, from Mobile to Columbia and spend some personal time with him just shooting the shit. I know one thing, everybody felt comfortable around the guy, and he just wanted to share the joy he got from playing music with us.
RIP Chris Connor.

New Planet - Medeski, Martin & Wood
6.17.06 - Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TNHopefully everyone had an opportunity to lock in their Bonnaroo tickets today. As far as U.S. music festivals go, there’s no larger platform for artists to put on a memorable concert that showcases their primary talents. With Medeski, Martin & Wood the talent lies in their unique ability to morph traditional jazz structures into danceable funk without sacrificing the complexity, clarity, or classiness that often inherits space within the jazz construct.
I’ve seen MMW on the festival circuit countless times over the past five summers, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping to catch them this year. Their professional, yet humble attitude always seems to shine through in the lengths at which they’ll go to put on a memorable show. Likewise, they’re a great starting point for anyone curious about jazz but at a loss of an accessible starting point.

7.20.06 - Charter One Pavilion, Chicago, ILHere’s one of Trey’s post-Phish 2.0 songs that really brought jam potential, which showed itself when The Duo teamed up with Mike and Trey during the summer of 2006. I’ve been curious as to whether this will get a reworking for Phish 3.0 and emerge as a new jam vehicle. It’s gained comparisons to Reba, but could definitely become its own unique monster in 2009.

Side - Travis

My sister and brother-in-law (he is from Northern Ireland) turned me on to Travis a few years ago. There’s something about the melodic, rythmic signature of certain U.K. bands that gets into me… so much so that I created a Radio 1 station on Pandora. I was inspired to put up a Travis post when another friend on Facebook recently became a fan. -

Well, Good Morning, Y’all!
I had a great weekend. Anybody else? Cooked out with some friends, tied one on, and caught some good local music on Saturday (Concrete Jumpsuit at Utopia in Columbia, SC).
Thought I’d throw you some “bluegrass” today in honor of sold-out Avett’s gig at HOB in Myrtle Beach Saturday Night. This clip was aired on a morning news show in their home state of North Carolina a few years ago. I got a chance to catch a little bit of The Avett Brothers set at the Forecastle Festival a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. They kind of remind me of an old honky-tonk vaudeville show, playing for whiskey, laughs, and women. They’re fun and quirky, and talented, taboot.
