“I Shall Be Released” - Wilco & Fleet Foxes
8.23.08 - Bend, Oregon
Last month, while on a west coast tour with Fleet Foxes, Wilco invited their opening band to join them for an inspiring rendition of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” At the urging of fans, Wilco has released a free mp3 available for dowload at their site. You can download it from us, or from Wilco. All they ask is that you agree to vote in November. So you should probably download this song, and vote.
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door - U2
04.10.1985
Hampton Coliseum
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Shows at Hampton Coliseum are colossal. This was my very first concert ever, ever. I was 14 years old. Me and a friend got to go without parents in tow. It was general admission and we had no idea what to do when they opened the doors. We were literally the first ones there. We decided we weren’t ready for the floor and so we sat to the right of the stage in the first row of seats off the floor.
I’m posting this song first (got the whole show from u2start.com) because I remember it so distinctly; Bono talking about how 4 chords changed him and could change the world. Listen about 4:30 in where he asks for someone from the audience to come up and play with them. I can see it in my mind’s eye like it was yesterday.
This is bringing back some great memories. More to come…
Desolation Row - Bob Dylan
4.13.66 - Sydney Stadium, Sydney, Australia
While Dylan’s voice has been the subject of much criticism, when he was a young man his voice delivered with clarity and authenticity the critical messages contained in his lyrics. Desolation Row is a lyrical masterpiece, painting a picture of a surreal scene that Dylan himself described in a USA Today interview on September 10, 2001 as coming from “some ragtag minstrel show in blackface at the carnivals when I was growing up, and it had an effect on me, just as much as seeing the lady with four legs.” These remain some of my favorite lyrics by any artist, just because of the imagery that I can conjure every time I hear it:
They’re selling postcards of the hanging
They’re painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Featured on Highway 61 Revisited, the poetic stlye is definitive of Dylan’s career, and remains his longest song nearly forty-five years after its recording.
Man Of Peace - Bob Dylan & The Grateful Dead
7.24.87 - Oakland County Stadium, Oakland, CA
While the official Dylan & The Dead release is rather lackluster, there were some great collaborations and overall strong performances when the two partnered in 1987. And while many are fans of extended improv from Jerry & Co., at their heart the Grateful Dead were always a band about the songs first and foremost.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
