Handshake Drugs - Wilco
6.13.09 - Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN
Wilco delivered one of the strongest performances of the 8th annual Bonnaroo. Playing the main stage during the late afternoon on Saturday, Tweedy and Co. mixed it up with material from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost Is Born, Summerteeth, and their forthcoming album, Wilco (The Album).
The set was perhaps best defined by the song choices and how their lyrics matched up to the festival, time slot (Bull Black Nova’s reference to the setting sun), and world events. Nels Kline delivered some breathtaking guitar work, shredding with precision and careful note selection, While Glen Kotche and Jeff Tweedy locked in for some driving rhythms. For those who were only slightly familiar with the band’s repertoire and long-time fans alike, the full mixture of Americana came through with passion and pride on the nation’s largest stage.
This is a big week on tour for us. We are excited to give you as much coverage as we can during and after the shows.
Butter Room Chicago (minus Joel) kick off the week in Asheville tonight for the Phish show. On Wednesday, we will be live blogging from three shows. Matt and Eugene (aka Butter Room Chicago) will be at Phish in Knoxville. Sparky and I will be sending updates form David Byrne in Charlottesville, and Curry will be covering No Doubt in Virginia Beach.
The weekend is going to be big with Matt and Eugene at Bonnaroo, and Martin gets into the act with Blue Mountain in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina.

Instantly - STS9
6.15.07 - Bonnarroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN
I recently discovered STS9 has its own tumblr, so be on the lookout for more reblogs of their posts. This one opened up the group’s 2007 appearance at Bonnaroo. While they aren’t part of the initial lineup, one can hope they’ll be kicking down a late night set at Bonnaroo come June.

New Planet - Medeski, Martin & Wood
6.17.06 - Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN
Hopefully everyone had an opportunity to lock in their Bonnaroo tickets today. As far as U.S. music festivals go, there’s no larger platform for artists to put on a memorable concert that showcases their primary talents. With Medeski, Martin & Wood the talent lies in their unique ability to morph traditional jazz structures into danceable funk without sacrificing the complexity, clarity, or classiness that often inherits space within the jazz construct.
I’ve seen MMW on the festival circuit countless times over the past five summers, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping to catch them this year. Their professional, yet humble attitude always seems to shine through in the lengths at which they’ll go to put on a memorable show. Likewise, they’re a great starting point for anyone curious about jazz but at a loss of an accessible starting point.
Bonnaroo has announced the official 2009 festival lineup for June 11-14. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Phish, and The Beastie Boys will headline the festival. In addition Phish will also play a very special late night set. This will be the only festival Springsteen or Phish will play this summer.
We believe from a source close to the festival that The Beastie Boys will headline Friday night followed by Phish late night. Saturday The Boss will headline and NIN will play afterward. Phish will then close the festival as the last show of the festival on Sunday evening.

A swirl of rumors have circulated regarding the announcement of Bonnaroo’s lineup. Circulating today was an image featuring Phish, Paul McCartney and Daft Punk as headliners with The Dead, Allman Brothers and a slew of others in support. While Phish’s headlining spot is all but confirmed after adding an under the radar show on June 10th at Thompson Bolling Arena at the University of Tennesee, the rest of the lineup remains up for speculation. A persistent rumor remains that Bruce Springsteen will be headlining one night while Phish will play two shows over the weekend (although speculation also suggests they might be on the Friday and Sunday rather than on consecutive nights).
Springsteen’s tour schedule indicates he and the E Street Band will be performing from May 30th until June 10th in Europe, and playing more dates from July 1st through August 2nd. This makes it possible, but not very feasible for The Boss and Co. to return to the U.S. in just three days’ time to perform in Manchester. Perhaps more unlikely however, is that Daft Punk will return to the touring circuit a year and a half after their last major tour. The French duo tours internationally sparingly and had a previous 9 year gap between U.S. performances.
Other artists rumored to appear at this year’s festival include David Byrne, The Dead, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Disco Biscuits, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and more.
Check back with The Butter Room tomorrow and keek tabs on the official site for the latest on the ‘Roo situation.
It’s Phish Friday again. Each Friday, I hope to circulate one link from the internets that is Phish related. Here is Bob Lefsetz’s take on Phish playing Bonnaroo (still a rumor at this point).

Guitar Man Upstairs - Drive-By Truckers
6.13.08 Which Stage, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Manchester, TN
We’ve been posting a bunch from Bonaroo lately, but it’s hard to resist with the variety of live music that comes out of this one festival. These guys have been topping my itunes rotation lately. Definitely not the best version of the is song, but it will get you going none the less. A glass of George Dickel should work out the kinks.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
