Yo Mama - Frank Zappa
2.15.78 - Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Germany
Absolutely Disgusting
Driver 8 - R.E.M.
2.10.85 - Zeche Bochum, Germany
You remember your first favorite band? The one that you saw live and finally you just “got it”. Back in high school, I was starting to get really turned on to mostly British bands like The Clash, Psychadelic Furs, The Fixx, etc…etc. I always loved their rawer live sound.
Well it’s also no secret I am a huge fan of the bands that have rolled out of Athens, GA over the years. I could go on forever and ever about this southern live music mecca. And y’all just simply don’t want to hear it. Trust me. There just must be something in the water there.
So that brings me to what was to become my first favorite band. I vivdly remember watching R.E.M. playing Radio Free Europe on Letterman a couple years before this performance, and it may have changed my musical outlook forever. I loved the underproduced sound. I started seeing them play live right around the time of this Rockpalast show, and have seen them a handful of times over the years, and never been let down. Stipe is one of the best front men in the business.
Blue Sky - Allman Brothers Band
1991 - ohne Filter Musik Pur TV show, Germany
Why’d I pick Blue Sky as my pick for this week’s edition of The Southern Heat?
One reason, because I’ve never seen anybody unhappy when they listen to it. It just turns frowns upside down. It’s a happy song, and although it’s cold outside as back creek mountain outhouse at night…the sun is shining and before you know it, it’ll be in the 70’s again.
I’ve always really dug this particular clip, because of the Warren Haynes contribution. Every time the Allman’s started suffering (late ’80s and late ’90s), Warren, the hardest working man in show business, drops by to lend a hand and get the train back on the tracks. There’s so much talent in the Allman’s, it would really suck to see their own dysfunctionality cause their departure. I love how Warren’s slide solo just takes wings and rolls right into Dickey’s elevations. Such a difference in styles. The brief lead and harmony interludes are signature Allman Brothers. Not many bands have captured it, although many have tried. Makes me feel all warm inside…as it probably did the Germans on this day.
“Goin’ to Carolina, won’t be long and I’ll be there…”

ff=66 - Jawbox
4.26.93 - Koz Uni-Campus, Frankfurt, Germany
Jawbox was without a doubt my favorite band starting my senior year of high school and throughout college. I had a mild crush on Kim (something about female bass players) and their second drummer, Zach (featured in this video) is still to this day the only drummer I’ve seen to break his sticks while counting off. Rock!

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
