Harry Hood
Phish
11-22-97
The Mother Ship
Hampton, VA
There is a reason Phish put out “Hampton Comes Alive.” As if by definition, any Phish show at Hampton Colesium is, well, colossal. There is something about that place. (The Dead had some good runs there too, by the way.) Sadly, I missed this hometown gig, but I’m pretty sure Graham and Todd were there.
Mike’s Song > I am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove - Phish
11.22.97 - Hampton, VA
This is one of my favorite Weekapaugs of all time. It was the show opener of the second night of what I feel was the best Hampton run of all time. Then they followed up this trio with “Harry Hood”. I recall a buddy thinking the show was over after the first set because it was so *epic* (well and maybe there were some other factors too).
Might as Well - Grateful Dead
3.26.88 - Hampton Coliseum, Hampton VA
There are so many memorable Dead shows from Hampton Coliseum. I’m sure we will post most, if not all of them on Grateful Sundays. Instead of going with one of the more well known moments, I decided to pick a personal favorite. You can feel the passion and energy coming from Jerry during this “Might as Well”. It gets me going every single time I listen to it.
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door - U2
04.10.1985
Hampton Coliseum
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Shows at Hampton Coliseum are colossal. This was my very first concert ever, ever. I was 14 years old. Me and a friend got to go without parents in tow. It was general admission and we had no idea what to do when they opened the doors. We were literally the first ones there. We decided we weren’t ready for the floor and so we sat to the right of the stage in the first row of seats off the floor.
I’m posting this song first (got the whole show from u2start.com) because I remember it so distinctly; Bono talking about how 4 chords changed him and could change the world. Listen about 4:30 in where he asks for someone from the audience to come up and play with them. I can see it in my mind’s eye like it was yesterday.
This is bringing back some great memories. More to come…
Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
04.10.1985
Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA
Under a Blood Red Sky will go down as one of the greatest albums of all time. This song will go down as one of the greatest songs of all time. I feel fortunate to have seen it live in it’s hey day.
“This song is not a rebel song.”
Bruce Springsteen is steamed over Ticketmaster’s handling of the public on-sale event for his upcoming tourdates. Ticketmaster has a subsidiary called TicketsNow that is basically a scalper or “secondary” marketplace for tickets. TM directs customers to TicketsNow when no tickets are available for the show a customer requests tickets for.
As many of us experienced during Phish’s Hampton on-sale (also handled by Ticketmaster), tickets were appearing on TicketsNow in droves, and were there before the shows had even officially sold out. However, most of the fans were locked out of the system and unable to obtain tickets during this same period of time. Same story, different day here. The Boss’s fans saw what many Phish fans experienced back in October, and there was little for them to do. Yet, over 250 fans wrote, emailed or called the Attorney General in New Jersey.
Additionally, Springsteen himself issued a statement on his site, focusing on the poor tactics and questioning where tickets on TicketsNow are actually coming from, “Last Monday, we were informed that Ticketmaster was redirecting your log-in requests for tickets at face value, to their secondary site TicketsNow, which specializes in up-selling tickets at above face value. They did this even when other seats remained available at face value. We condemn this practice.”
Ticketmaster CEO Irving Azoff, has responded with the following statement that may be encouraging to fans of all artists who are forced to utilize TM:
While we were genuinely trying to do the right thing for fans in providing more choices when the tickets they requested from the primary on-sale were not available, we clearly missed the mark. Fans are confused and angry, which is the opposite of what we hoped to accomplish. We sincerely apologize to Bruce, his organization and, above all, his fans.
We recognize that we need to change our course. We have committed to Bruce and state publicly here that we have taken down all links for Bruce’s shows directing fans from Ticketmaster to TicketsNow. This redirection only occurred as a choice when we could not satisfy fans’ specific search request for primary ticket inventory, but to make sure there is no misunderstanding in the future, we also publicly state that we will never again link to TicketsNow in a manner that can possibly create any confusion during a high-demand on-sale. Specifically, we will not present an option to go to TicketsNow from Ticketmaster without the consent of the artist and the venue, both of whom work together to bring the joy of live entertainment to millions of fans.
If any fans inadvertently purchased tickets in the resale marketplace believing in error they were purchasing from the initial on-sale, we will refund the difference between the actual purchase price and the face price of the ticket. (Please don’t abuse this good faith gesture - we did not give brokers any preferential access to tickets.)
We are committed to helping deliver the most transparent and best live entertainment experience to fans. We will do better going forward.
Sincerely,
Irving Azoff, CEO, Ticketmaster Entertainment
Thanks to @multi_beast for the link to an awesome spreadsheet set up by some fans at Phantasy Tour to select your setlist guesses for Phish’s Hampton return. If you want to play, the entry is $5/person, winner take all. Email tourtourneypool@gmail.com for details.
With apologies to our fans who don’t enjoy Phish as much as we do, this is the week we have all been waiting for. Phish returns to the stage on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Hampton, VA at Hampton Coliseum.
Before the Shows
We plan to celebrate the occasion by switching up our programming to be all things Hampton all week. Leading up to the show, we will be posting Hampton: From the Archives - and this won’t just be Phish. Hampton has been the scene of some legendary shows from Elvis to the Stones to the Dead to U2 to DMB to Phish. In addition to the archives, there will be lots more content about Phish and Hampton leading up to the first song on Friday night.
From the Shows
On Thursday, Matt and Eugene hit the road from Chicago and will be at all three shows. Graham and I will be making the two hour trek from Central VA on Sunday morning for Sunday night’s show. The four of us will be posting our best content on the site all weekend. For total Butter Room coverage, follow us on twitter and subscribe to our photostream at flickr. We will be tweeting and uploading pics from the road, lot, hotel, and inside the show (if AT&T can handle it).
Safe travels!

The last Hampton Grateful Dead show in the 1980s might be their most memorable. Billed as “Formerly The Warlocks” to circumvent a ban placed on the Dead at Hampton the year before, the October 8-9 run at Hampton had quite a few bust-outs. October 8 featured the first “Help > Slip” in over 4 years. The “Attics” encore on the 9th was the first one since ‘72, but the biggest bust-out of them all was the first “Dark Star” in over 5 years: last played on July 13th, 1984.

This is some outstanding footage of the Stones’ final tour stop in 1981. It was the first ever pay-per-view concert dubbed “The World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll party”. It’s funny to see their stage set-up in 1981 compared to the monumental productions of the last few Stones’ tours. But, this was huge for 1981 in typical Stones’ fashion. Truly great stuff.
Finally, during the “Satisfaction” finale, Keith Richards combats a fan who runs on stage with his guitar. Pretty hilarious. Check it out below.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
