Gumbo -> Sanity - Phish
8.15.98 - Lemonwheel, Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, Maine
This Gumbo features one of the tightest ‘98 space funk jams that Phish performed. All cylinders are firing on this jam and the groove is just simply undeniable. I tend to lock into Fishman on this one, but that seems to be a central theme to most great, next-level Fishman jams. The Sanity that flows out of the jam is what makes Phish so special to me. Taking a comical (yet rare) tune, to add some humor in nod to something amazing (see: insane) is what has and will continue to keep me in love with this band.
Henrietta will have the chops in an even better place when we see the boys back next week at Red Rocks!
Phish - Festivalography Pt 2/4
Part two covers Phish’s festivals from 1998 and 1999, Lemonwheel and Camp Oswego, highlighting their growth as a band, and contrasting Phish’s festival versus multi-band festivals from the same time period. There’s a great version of the Talking Heads’ “Cities” as well as one of my personal favorite jams from 1998, Gumbo -> Sanity.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
