Wolfman’s Brother > Simple > Odd Couple Jam > My Soul - Phish
8.16.97 - The Great Went, Loring Air Force Base, Limestone ME
We had a request this morning from Grill_Meister on twitter for anything Went. Well, if this doesn’t do it for you, then check out some of our older Went posts.
The Lizards - Phish
8.3.03 - IT Festival, Limestone, ME
This was one of my favorite Phish moments. It wasn’t my first version of Lizards, but as the festival wound down, and this dropped in the third set after a fiery 46 Days and Julius, a certain calm washed over the entire crowd. I was about five rows back, dead center in front of Trey, and I snapped this photo as the band entered the ending jam:

Like the photo, there was a certain symmetry and unity to the whole thing. Not just in the band, and not just in the lights, and not even the music; but in the air and in the people. It was one of those moments where it was bigger than any of us, it was simply the experience of being together in the middle of nowhere, living in the moment and loving life.
It’s moments like these (and there have been a number of them, and certainly a few during Hampton) that have me looking forward to being with Phish on a summer evening with a cool breeze at our backs while the band hits that stride that I’ve only ever see Phish hit. It’s something special, and we’ll see it all over the country this summer, from Jones Beach to Bonnaroo, at Red Rocks and out in The Gorge. We’re really lucky to have these four guys still alive and making music in 2009.
Reba - Phish
8.2.03 - IT Festival, Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, Maine
One of the best Rebas Phish has played, and certainly the best version post-hiatus. The jam really takes off at about 12:30. Trey lays down some very tasteful licks and Fish is all sorts of locked in with Gordo. It might be Page’s subtle textures that just highlight Trey, but this jam always does it for me!
Gumbo -> Sanity - Phish
8.15.98 - Lemonwheel, Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, Maine
This Gumbo features one of the tightest ‘98 space funk jams that Phish performed. All cylinders are firing on this jam and the groove is just simply undeniable. I tend to lock into Fishman on this one, but that seems to be a central theme to most great, next-level Fishman jams. The Sanity that flows out of the jam is what makes Phish so special to me. Taking a comical (yet rare) tune, to add some humor in nod to something amazing (see: insane) is what has and will continue to keep me in love with this band.
Henrietta will have the chops in an even better place when we see the boys back next week at Red Rocks!
Funky Bitch, While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Phish (w/ Warren Haynes)
12.11.95 - Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland, ME
While the MSG dates this fall promise an epic throwdown, the early sleeper favorite has to be the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, ME. Just 6 hours away from the what many Phish fans must consider the farthest point in the world (aka: Loring Air Force Base), CCCC has played host to some great Phish in the past.
This one comes to us from infamous Fall ‘95 tour, in a show that featured a rare Guyute/My Friend My Friend combo and an introduction to Dog Log.
Dueling guitars galore, Warren and Trey tear these covers a new one. Take that, Southern Heat!
Phish - Festivalography Pt 2/4
Part two covers Phish’s festivals from 1998 and 1999, Lemonwheel and Camp Oswego, highlighting their growth as a band, and contrasting Phish’s festival versus multi-band festivals from the same time period. There’s a great version of the Talking Heads’ “Cities” as well as one of my personal favorite jams from 1998, Gumbo -> Sanity.
Crimes Of The Mind - Phish
11.29.09 - Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland, ME
During Sunday’s delightfully small show in Portland, the boys launched the second set with a great Rock and Roll > Light which morphed into Crimes Of The Mind. This song has only been played seven times ever, with only one previous performance since 1994. The band also played it for the first time without The Dude Of Life, Steve Pollack, who had performed the vocals the previous six times. What a show, and what a tour from Phish!

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
