‘Bout My Money - Outformation
09.15.2006 - Rocks Off Boat Cruise, New York, NY
So, Southern Heat had to make a super-hard decision this New Year’s Eve. Options in Charleston, SC were as follows: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Bloodkin, and Outformation. Being a rooted Panic fan, first thought was to catch Outformation on the 30th, and Bloodkin on the 31st. Love you Jason, but hate the Music Farm.
So, off I go to see Outformation the first night and I was really blown away by how these guys are developing. outformation are what’s great about Southern Rock, and keeping it alive. It kind of felt like Mike Houser playing with the Marshall Tucker Band. Back woods, whiskey drinking with a lingering lead and just enough psychedelia to keep jambanders interested, and a great tight knit fanbase of good people. It felt like I was surrounded by family like the old days with Phish and Panic.
Sam Holt is the real deal, but often outshadows the tremendous play of keyboardist C.R. Gruver(who by the way may lay down the nastiest West LA Fadeaway this listener has ever heard, outside of Jerry’s speedball years). Seriously, this guy is talent and is a nice guy taboot.
Sorry for the lame video…but look out for their new DVD “…Been a While.” to be released soon.
Get out there and support ‘em on the road. They’re playing about 150 dates a year, and I’ll bet they’re coming to a bar room near you.

Mystery Train - Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders

This is the second post we’ve shared in the past week from Albany’s Palace Theater, this one coming 18 years before Phish played their ‘92 own November show. It’s hard to believe that both of these two greats are no longer with us. Enjoy this wonderful cover of Elvis Presley’s “Mystery Train.” -
Easy Wind - Grateful Dead
2.21.71 - Capitol Theater, Port Chester, NY
One of my favorite aspects of the Grateful Dead’s long and illustrious career is the early, blues-driven material. Much of this holds a special place in my heart, largely because of Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and his wonderful vocals, harmonica, and work on keyboards. A founding member of the Dead, Pigpen grew up with strong R&B and blues influences. His father was a R&B disc jockey, a rare thing for a white guy from northern California in the late ‘60’s.
Pigpen quickly caught on to all aspects of the blues lifestyle, especially drinking hard. His last show with the Grateful Dead was in 1972, and he died of internal hemorrhaging due to his excessive drinking on March 8, 1973. Yet his desire for the Dead to be a rock and roll band is very much ingrained in the sound Jerry, Phil, Bobby, and Billy carried forward after his passing, and his playing on their late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s material is outstanding by any measure. His vocals on this rather rare Dead tune (written by Robert Hunter) are stellar. -
Long Time Gone - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Here’s a great tune from CSNY’s six-night run in June of 1970 that was later compiled into the live release, Four Way Street. Crosby, Stills & Nash will be touring throughout the summer beginning in June. Neil wrapped up his spring U.S. tour at NOLA Jazz Fest last weekend, and will embark on a tour of Europe beginning May 30th in Barcelona.

What is Hip? - Tower of Power
5.14.74 - Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NYOne of my favorite genres of music is funk. Funk seems to have a lot of different connotations for different people. However, if I had to define the funk I’m a fan of most, I’d direct all interested booty shakers to this band and this song. If you’ve never heard Tower of Power, or only remember that Balco roidster Victor Conte played bass for the group in a later incarnation, then sit back, hit play and be prepared for uncontrollable funkgasms.

8.1.71 - Madison Square Garden, NY, NY (Concert for Bangledash)Per Wikipedia:
The Concert For Bangladesh was the event title for two benefit concerts organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, held at noon and at 7:00 p.m. on August 1, 1971, playing to a total of 40,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Organized for the relief of refugees fromEast Pakistan (now independent Bangladesh) after the 1970 Bhola cyclone and during the 1971 Bangladesh atrocities and Bangladesh Liberation War, the event was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in world history. It featured an all-star supergroup of performers that included Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and Ringo Starr.
This ended up being one of the best supergroup concerts ever put together, and this little medley is wonderful (save Clapton who was in such bad shape his guitar wasn’t even turned on). Enjoy!

Looks Like Rain -> Jam - Grateful Dead
3.28.85 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY1985 is one of my favorite Dead years, and with good cause. It is one of the last years to find all members still reasonably on top of their skills, creating truly innovative and interesting improv, and the sets featured a wide variety of material. This 16 minute Looks Like Rain features a really great jam.
Enjoy this as well as some great picks from April and June of 1985. We’ll revisit this year later in the summer with some more choice picks.
