The Whigs - Kill Me Carolyne
3.31.10 - Late Night with David Letterman
Will be seeing these guys in a month!
Morning, Freaks!
Riddle me this?
Name one band that has ever said that playing Madison Square Garden sucks. There ain’t one. There is an incredible electricity in a New York audience!! And I think most musicians realize they have reached the apex of live playing when they walk out onto the stage of this. The Grateful Dead played some absolutely gargantuan shows in and around the biggest, baddest city in the world.
Phish - Festivalography Pt 2/4
Part two covers Phish’s festivals from 1998 and 1999, Lemonwheel and Camp Oswego, highlighting their growth as a band, and contrasting Phish’s festival versus multi-band festivals from the same time period. There’s a great version of the Talking Heads’ “Cities” as well as one of my personal favorite jams from 1998, Gumbo -> Sanity.
Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox - Jerry Garcia Band
11.15.91 - Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
My lil bro always said he liked JGB more than the Dead. There was really something special and different about it. Jerry had a way of reaching deep down into you and grabbing a hold of your soul. i always felt like the music of JGB was more inspirational than the Grateful Dead. I felt like I was going to church.
Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox became a staple of a lot of the JGB shows I went to in the 90’s. Watch Jerry’s gestures and facial expressions in this one. Hap-Hap-Happy Jerry!! That boppy little beat … I miss it. Spilling one out for you, my man. RIP.
Ramble On Rose - Grateful Dead
3.23.72 - Academy of Music, New York, NY
This Ramble is from the third night of a seven night run at the academy of music in march ‘72. They only took one night off, playing the 21st-23rd and 25th-28th. This post made me realize i need to track down a few of these shows. Enjoy!
Casey Shea grew up next door to me in Florida back in the late 80s and 90s. Until recently, the last conversation I had with him about music was Phish and Big Cypress (he went, I didn’t). Now he is making his own music, and is damn good at it. Check out his blog at caseysheamusic.com/blog. He plays primarily in NYC, but you can download a lot of his studio stuff from the blog.
Have a listen and tell us what you think of Casey’s sound?
This is only part of Spiders, but it is such a good vid and I had to post. In addition, I am just getting into Yo La Tengo. There is another vid of this performance on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnJ80lqvy5s
Happy Phish Friday, especially for those heading to Deer Creek tonight! I plan to post a few more faves from summer tour today. Matt, Eugene, Martin, and Sparky will be posting from the road all weekend.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
