The Whigs - Kill Me Carolyne
3.31.10 - Late Night with David Letterman
Will be seeing these guys in a month!
Morning, Freaks!
Riddle me this?
Name one band that has ever said that playing Madison Square Garden sucks. There ain’t one. There is an incredible electricity in a New York audience!! And I think most musicians realize they have reached the apex of live playing when they walk out onto the stage of this. The Grateful Dead played some absolutely gargantuan shows in and around the biggest, baddest city in the world.
Ramble On Rose - Grateful Dead
3.23.72 - Academy of Music, New York, NY
This Ramble is from the third night of a seven night run at the academy of music in march ‘72. They only took one night off, playing the 21st-23rd and 25th-28th. This post made me realize i need to track down a few of these shows. Enjoy!
Casey Shea grew up next door to me in Florida back in the late 80s and 90s. Until recently, the last conversation I had with him about music was Phish and Big Cypress (he went, I didn’t). Now he is making his own music, and is damn good at it. Check out his blog at caseysheamusic.com/blog. He plays primarily in NYC, but you can download a lot of his studio stuff from the blog.
Have a listen and tell us what you think of Casey’s sound?
Jumpin’ Jack Flash/Young Blood - George Harrison, Leon Russell, Billie Preston, Ringo Star, Jim Keltner, George Harrison, Eric Clapton
8.1.71 - Madison Square Garden, NY, NY (Concert for Bangledash)
Per Wikipedia:
The Concert For Bangladesh was the event title for two benefit concerts organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, held at noon and at 7:00 p.m. on August 1, 1971, playing to a total of 40,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Organized for the relief of refugees fromEast Pakistan (now independent Bangladesh) after the 1970 Bhola cyclone and during the 1971 Bangladesh atrocities and Bangladesh Liberation War, the event was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in world history. It featured an all-star supergroup of performers that included Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and Ringo Starr.
This ended up being one of the best supergroup concerts ever put together, and this little medley is wonderful (save Clapton who was in such bad shape his guitar wasn’t even turned on). Enjoy!
While You Were Sleeping - Elvis Perkins in Dearland
6.13.07 - Late Show with David Letterman, New York City, NY
On my way in to work a couple months ago I caught the tail end of a NPR interview with Elvis Perkins. The featured song clips struck a cord and I can’t seem to get enough.
This coming Monday Todd and I will be seeing Elvis close to home. Not sure what to expect. We’re really new to his music, the venue is very small (the kind with tables and chairs), and it’s a Monday night. One thing is for sure, I’m excited to get out and see something new. Enjoy!
Fly Like An Eagle - Steve Miller Band
6.12.76 - Beacon Theatre, New York, NY

(photo via)
In May 1976, Steve Miller Band released their 9th studio album, Fly Like An Eagle. The album rocketed up the charts, and went platinum four times over. This show finds SMB at the height of their success, and sounding very good. The album’s title track was originally recorded in 1973 with a blusier, less funk-infused sound. However, the song’s guitar hook actually originated from Miller’s 1969 recording of “My Dark Hour,” featuring Paul McCartney.
You can download the entire show in two parts: Part I | Part II
Trey and Page and Buddy Guy sit in with the Allman Brothers Band last night at the Beacon.
One of the few times Phish actually delivered a bust out that everyone expected. This is the final track from the new board track compilation posted over on Hidden Track this week. Hope you enjoyed it!

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
