“I Shall Be Released” - Wilco & Fleet Foxes
8.23.08 - Bend, Oregon
Last month, while on a west coast tour with Fleet Foxes, Wilco invited their opening band to join them for an inspiring rendition of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” At the urging of fans, Wilco has released a free mp3 available for dowload at their site. You can download it from us, or from Wilco. All they ask is that you agree to vote in November. So you should probably download this song, and vote.
China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider - Grateful Dead
8/27/72 - Old Renaissance Faire Grounds, Veneta, OR
Minor Threat and Grateful Dead in back to back posts. The Butter Room kicks it up!
I grew up listening to both of these bands, a lot. I know you may be thinking that’s an odd combination. Punk rock vs musical exploration. Straight edge vs the Hippies. Indeed they have differences, but these two bands helped me to break away from my parent’s tastes to form my own, shaped my deep appreciation for music and, in an indirect way, taught me to keep an open mind.
Now you know a little more about me ;)
We Are the Tide - Blind Pilot
08.08.08
Portland Bridge Pedal, Portland, Oregon
Earlier this year, a good friend and I simultaneously stumbled upon this group (duo plus regular bandmates, I think). One day he passed me a link over IM or somesuchthing, to which my reply was one of surprise and something like, “Yes! I totally dig them, have been listening a few weeks now.” Similar music tastes not withstanding, who would figure a guy in Virginia Beach, Virginia and one in Bangor, Maine would both catch on to an acoustic duo from Portland, Oregon who tour on bicycle on the west coast?
Well, when you hear them it will be obvious. He just sent me this video the other day. Given that it’s live, in support of a bike race, and from 08.08.08 it seemed like great fit for TBR. Let us know what you think and if you want to hear more live Blind Pilot:

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
