‘Bout My Money - Outformation
09.15.2006 - Rocks Off Boat Cruise, New York, NY
So, Southern Heat had to make a super-hard decision this New Year’s Eve. Options in Charleston, SC were as follows: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Bloodkin, and Outformation. Being a rooted Panic fan, first thought was to catch Outformation on the 30th, and Bloodkin on the 31st. Love you Jason, but hate the Music Farm.
So, off I go to see Outformation the first night and I was really blown away by how these guys are developing. outformation are what’s great about Southern Rock, and keeping it alive. It kind of felt like Mike Houser playing with the Marshall Tucker Band. Back woods, whiskey drinking with a lingering lead and just enough psychedelia to keep jambanders interested, and a great tight knit fanbase of good people. It felt like I was surrounded by family like the old days with Phish and Panic.
Sam Holt is the real deal, but often outshadows the tremendous play of keyboardist C.R. Gruver(who by the way may lay down the nastiest West LA Fadeaway this listener has ever heard, outside of Jerry’s speedball years). Seriously, this guy is talent and is a nice guy taboot.
Sorry for the lame video…but look out for their new DVD “…Been a While.” to be released soon.
Get out there and support ‘em on the road. They’re playing about 150 dates a year, and I’ll bet they’re coming to a bar room near you.
Outformation Turns Up The Heat
“Fastburn” Release -April 21, 2009
On April 21, 2009, Outformation will release their newest album, “Fastburn,”, the Atlanta-based band’s follow up to their 2007 release, “Traveler’s Rest”. Holt says, “We didn’t have a plan making this record, why restrict ourselves. This is our best work.”
“Fastburn” was produced by Outformation and Eli Akins at Fidelitorium Recording Studio, owned by Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Suzanne Vega). “Fastburn” is a culmination of high energy and creative relationships. Outformation really turns up the heat with this newest release.
Outformation’s sound draws on a variety of genres, from electrified southern tunes to powerful, melodic vocals. Since being named Honest Tune’s “Best New Band” in 2005, Outformation has built a reputation for bringing the music to the people by playing across the U.S. to their loyal fan base. As an appreciation to the fans, Outformation offered the new album, “Fastburn” to their fans for free for two weeks, a month before the album’s actual release. The fans were in fact much appreciative, as the album received several thousands of downloads in the first week.
Outformation is guitarist-vocalist Sam Holt, guitarist Benji Shanks, bassist Grady Upchurch, drummer-singer Lee Schwartz, and percussionist Jeff “Birddog” Lane.
Thanks to the very good people at Home Team Publicity, I got a little pre-release of the upcoming album. I’ll try to get a couple tracks up this week for your listening pleasure.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
