Phil Lesh, Joan Osborne, and Bob Weir / 6.17.03 / Virginia Beach, VA
My wedding anniversary falls in June, and so does several other anniversaries of shows I attended. I’ll always try to recognize significant year anniversaries when I remember.
The first is the Dead at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater, 5 years ago tonight. This was my second “miracle” show. I stumbled upon an offer for free tickets on rec.music.gdead, but had no idea that the seats were in the 2nd row. What a gift.
Three years before the memorable Fall ‘89 bust-out run at Hampton, the Grateful Dead delivered one of their biggest bust-outs of all-time. “Box of Rain” had been shelved for 777 shows. Last time played was July 28, 1973 at Watkins Glen. Hampton was the site of it’s glorious return.
Here is a fan review by John Whitehead from Deadbase X of 3-20-86:
After a few minutes, Bob stepped up and said, “Now we’re goona prove that practice makes perfect,” and we relaxed, thinking his statement was an apology for a repeat of last night’s Visions of Johanna. They started something different though - it sounded like Box of Rain, and I looked at my friend Bill. He was looking at me with the same look of wonder/expectation that I had, and we knew it had to be it and smiled BIG smiles. Sure enough, the crowd was feeling the same way, a buzz arose, and when Phil stepped to the microphone, the spotlight went on, and when he sand, “Look out of any window” the crowd erupted in screams, drowning out his first line. Healy cranked Phil’s vocals way up, and the crowd surprisingly limited its cheering to only the end of every line so everyone could hear him sing it well. After more than a dozen years on the shelf, it proved to be as sparkling as ever
Ten years ago this week was the legendary three day Phil & Phriends run at the Warfield. Phil Lesh was joined by Steve Kimock, John Molo, Trey Anastasio, and Page McConnell. If you haven’t seen this vid before, it’s about an hour and forty minutes long with highlights from the first night (4-15-99). It includes “Viola Lee Blues”, “Big Railroad Blues”, “Row Jimmy”, “Shakedown Street”, “The Wheel”, “Not Fade Away”, and “Mr. Tambourine Man”.
Bird Song > Born Cross Eyed > Let It Grow - Furthur
9.18.09 - Fox Theater, Oakland, CA
Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have quickly formed a new Dead project with some new, but familiar faces. The lineup is:
Bob Weir - Rhythm Guitar
Phil Lesh - Bass
Jeff Chimenti - Keys
John Kadlecik - Lead Guitar
Jay Lane - Drums
Joe Russo - Drums
Unlike The Dead, which seemed worn and ragged, uneven and at times simply over the hill, Furthur’s three shows this weekend seem to have breathed some life into the Grateful Dead community. John Kadlecik (aka Fake Jerry) from Dark Star Orchestra plays a more authentic and true to form lead guitar than most have done since the fat man’s passing, and Joe Russo brings not only serious chops but a slightly different approach than Dead fans are probably used to.
On another note, The Butter Room would like to send a special shout out to our friend, contributor, and loyal Dead Head, Martin, who turned the big 4-0 yesterday. Hope you had a wonderful weekend, Southern Heat!
St. Stephen > The Eleven - Phil Lesh and Friends (ft. Trey Anastasio)
6.30.06 - Tweeter Center, Camden, NJ
Phil and Friends play a ripping St. Stephen > The Eleven. This was Trey’s first public appearance on stage following his admission to rehab earlier in the year, and some wonderful guitar work.
For some more Phil and Trey, check out today’s jamwich, the first set of 4.17.99 which is one big Dark Star!
Dark Star -> It’s Up To You > Dark Star -> My Favorite Things -> Mississippi Half-Step, Bird Song, Terrapin Station > Down With Disease > Dark Star
Phil Lesh and Phriends
April 17, 1999 - The Warfield, San Francisco, CA
This is a Dead Phish jamwich of some seriously large proportions!

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
