Diner - Widespread panic
11.09.08 - Riverside Theater, Milwaukee, WI
You know Southerners, we’re a proud lot. It ain’t for naught, ‘cause we got a lot to be proud of. We are home to the finest foods in America. Seriously, we got shrimp ‘n grits, collard greens, rice and beans, pig pickin’, nanna puddin’ and the beloved Nectar - of – the – Gods…Sweet Tea. For those of you that don’t know what that is. It’s kind of like y’all do in other parts of the country with those little blue and pink sweetener packets, except our aunts and grandmas take all the labor out of it by adding 5 lbs. of sugar and mixing it down for us.
And it’s hot down here, and southern heat makes us a little crazy, not “batshit crazy ‘cause my trailer don’t have no A/C” crazy, but more like “I’m from LA (lower alabama) and I ain’t got no job since the tire factory shut down and my old lady is bitching ‘cause there ain’t no money to get that new fake Christmas tree with the white snow looking spray paint on it from the Wal-Mart store” crazy. Heck, one of my boys even once told me it’s so hot here, because the devil’s from the south. He may have been right, or just crazy…who knows? Or he may have just been dipping in the Sweet Tea Vodka that night.
Another thing we got is here in the South is arguably one of the finest hotbeds of live music in the country. Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band, the Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Molly Hatchet, Atlanta Rhythm Section and now carrying the torch onward and upward, the North Mississippi Allstars, My Morning Jacket, Dead Confederate, Tishamingo, Kings of Leon, Drive-By Truckers, and the 6 - Headed Monster known as Widespread Panic.
Now, Widespread Panic’s Fall Tour is a tradition here in the Southeast. We’ve been their tour circuit since the early days of the Weymanda Court A-Frame in Athens, GA circa ’85. I even had my first encounter with them on a fall tour in Richmond, VA in ‘88 ( www.everydaycompanion.com/setlists/19881020a.asp ) when I was back in college. 130 plus shows later, they control my ears and my wallet. You see, we’re religious about Panic’s fall tour, we always show up and we come to get down. The worst thing about fall tour where I live is that it gets in the way of two very important southern traditions…. Deer Hunting and SEC Football, might I add the latter has never been too kind to the good people of South Carolina. Seems supposedly we got lots of talent on the Gamecock squad this year, except their talent lies in stealing computers and keying cars, rather than tossing downfield bombs. Seriously, we might just have the worst D1 QB’s in the nation. There, I said it. Now, hunting, hunting ain’t no problem. It’s a southern man mainstay. Nothing’s more fun than sporting your best camo, hopping in your truck on a frigid morning, climbing up in a deer stand, with the aim to kill a poor helpless animal, but damn, they taste good, when served with a little of Nana’s gravy. Did I mention starting work on your flask at 5 am? Hey, it’s cold out there. Guns and liquor…name a better combination. And if you time it right and don’t fall out of your tree stand, you just might catch one of those little suckers unexpectedly, get ‘em to the processor, and still make it to the lot in time to down some Maker’s Mark before first set.
Now, on to guitars. You see, things got a little dicey there over the last few years, but we came out of it firing on all cylinders again like a new Chevrolet pick up. We had a merry - go - round of lead guitar players with Keane, Holt, McConnell (bless his heart), and Herring. Finally, we got the heat in Jimmy Herring, a technical superstar, journeyman, avid fisherman, and true southern gentleman. This year marked a melding within the band. Finally, the Godson-of-Soul John Bell and the most crucial piece of the 6 Headed Monster bassist Dave Schools, could rest their aching backs from carrying the rest of the band for the past three years. And get back to what they do best….melting faces. It took Jimmy five or six tours to a grip around Mikey Houser’s (May he rest in Peace) intricate and untraditional lead lines. Now he’s got ‘em down cold, although light on the infamous lingering lead, and is ripping us new buttholes with every soaring solo. On top of that, we’re seeing old songs rejuvinated and new songs gain steam. We’re a tough fanbase to please. But honestly, this band is going places again, and it’s getting sick. Next year is going to damage a lot of brains. Mark it.
You see I’m kind of a stat guy, believe it or not. This is what Fall ’08 left us with.

It’s hard to believe I’ve spent so much of my adult life with these guys following me around the country. And to be honest, some of my most memorable shows in Georgia. I vividly remember smoking hot nights in Macon, Savannah, Athens, and the old days in Valdosta. They always seem to blow it up for the home team crowd…and there’s always an air of “comfortability” when friends and family are around.
This clip is from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony www.georgiamusic.org. By the way, JB, if you’re out there, compliments on your speech. I know public speaking ain’t exactly your forte. Anyway, Congrats, Guys! It was well-deserved and a long time coming. (Maybe we’ll see Ludacris join Panic as a guest at a future show, because I know you guys were celebrating backstage on this night. Luda was one of the other Hall of Fame Inductees. Could make for an interesting Arleen…just sayin’)
Old Friend - Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks
So, this year marks the 20th anniversary of Warren Haynes’s annual Xmas Jam. The hardest working man in show business jacked the amp up to 11 and blew the doors off the Asheville Civic Center yet again making this one of the most fun events of the southern music season. Basically, it goes down like this. Warren gets together all of his friends in one of the most heady towns in the country, and they jam non-stop for three days (including the xmas prejam). There are day shows, night shows, pre-shows and post shows. Everybody sits in with everybody, and musical goodness oozes like this:

Oh, and by the way, if you haven’t heard yet, Widespread Panic will be simulcasting their NYE show from Denver as a DVD quality webcast, partnering with iclips.net again. Looks like it’s costing you about $16.50. Yonder Mountain String Band opens. No doubt this one’s gonna be a monster.
Let There Be Rock - Drive-By Truckers
Richmond, VA
Well Howdy, Y’all!!
Seems the Truckers are gonna make the NUCI SPACE Benefit on January 15th pretty darn interesting this year. How ‘bout this?…you tell us what to play. Two winners are going to write the setlist for The Rock Show. Sorry, guys, no Jason songs allowed. Seems it has to be a song sang by a current member fo the band. Anywho, rules are below. Gawd, I love this band. Good Luck!!
DBT CONTEST AND NEWS FROM PATTERSON HOOD
YOU
Yes, YOU CAN MAKE DBT’s SET LIST FOR The Annual NUCI’S SPACE BENEFIT 1/15/09!!!!
As everyone knows, DBT never uses a set list for our shows.
We decide the first song as we are walking onto the stage then it’s anything goes.
Sometimes it works better than others, but it always keeps us on our toes and I think makes for a more interesting Rock Experience.
That said, for this night we want to do something different.
We want to select two people to come up with a dream set list that we will play on our Thursday Night 40 Watt Show.
The winners will also get a signed handwritten set list of the show (signed by everyone), get to attend a private meet and greet with the band and be given access to the VIP section (with a guest) for the show.
BEST OF ALL, ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS WILL GO TO NUCI’S SPACE.
Here’s how it works:
(Two Different Ways)
1. YOU CAN BID ON IT.
We will hold an online auction and the highest bidder will get to select ten songs of his / her choice for the band to play at the show.
2. YOU CAN BUY A CHANCE ON IT.
We will sell chance tickets for $10.00 a piece for a drawing. The winner will also get to pick ten songs that the band will play at the show. If any of the songs are already picked by the above winner, you can select another.
There are some limitations, as set lists will have to be limited to songs sung by current members of the band.
Unreleased songs (like After The Scene Dies, Runaway Train, etc.) will have to be discussed (those two are certainly eligible but some might be limited due to time restraints, as we would hate to suck them up). Same with covers; if it’s one we all still know we’ll be happy to include it, but due to our recording schedule the week before the show we won’t really have an opportunity to learn that crazy Yes cover you always dreamed of DBT playing.
Still with over 100 songs in play it is a chance to customize your listening and viewing pleasure in unprecedented ways.
The only other major limitation is we would like to sequence it to insure a stellar flow of the show.
We will pick songs for the encore.
Then on Thursday January 15th, you and a guest can come, see an amazing set by South San Gabriel, a fantastic set by The Whigs, meet and greet DBT, and watch from the VIP section a DBT set custom tailored to your wildest Rock Desire.
After the show you can leave all aglow from both the ROCK and knowing that you have helped a great cause!

Blue Sky - Allman Brothers Band
1991 - ohne Filter Musik Pur TV show, Germany
Why’d I pick Blue Sky as my pick for this week’s edition of The Southern Heat?
One reason, because I’ve never seen anybody unhappy when they listen to it. It just turns frowns upside down. It’s a happy song, and although it’s cold outside as back creek mountain outhouse at night…the sun is shining and before you know it, it’ll be in the 70’s again.
I’ve always really dug this particular clip, because of the Warren Haynes contribution. Every time the Allman’s started suffering (late ’80s and late ’90s), Warren, the hardest working man in show business, drops by to lend a hand and get the train back on the tracks. There’s so much talent in the Allman’s, it would really suck to see their own dysfunctionality cause their departure. I love how Warren’s slide solo just takes wings and rolls right into Dickey’s elevations. Such a difference in styles. The brief lead and harmony interludes are signature Allman Brothers. Not many bands have captured it, although many have tried. Makes me feel all warm inside…as it probably did the Germans on this day.
“Goin’ to Carolina, won’t be long and I’ll be there…”
‘Bout My Money - Outformation
09.15.2006 - Rocks Off Boat Cruise, New York, NY
So, Southern Heat had to make a super-hard decision this New Year’s Eve. Options in Charleston, SC were as follows: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Bloodkin, and Outformation. Being a rooted Panic fan, first thought was to catch Outformation on the 30th, and Bloodkin on the 31st. Love you Jason, but hate the Music Farm.
So, off I go to see Outformation the first night and I was really blown away by how these guys are developing. outformation are what’s great about Southern Rock, and keeping it alive. It kind of felt like Mike Houser playing with the Marshall Tucker Band. Back woods, whiskey drinking with a lingering lead and just enough psychedelia to keep jambanders interested, and a great tight knit fanbase of good people. It felt like I was surrounded by family like the old days with Phish and Panic.
Sam Holt is the real deal, but often outshadows the tremendous play of keyboardist C.R. Gruver(who by the way may lay down the nastiest West LA Fadeaway this listener has ever heard, outside of Jerry’s speedball years). Seriously, this guy is talent and is a nice guy taboot.
Sorry for the lame video…but look out for their new DVD “…Been a While.” to be released soon.
Get out there and support ‘em on the road. They’re playing about 150 dates a year, and I’ll bet they’re coming to a bar room near you.
Let It Sing - The South
03.30.06
Anybody who got a chance to see The South was blessed. The band was a short -lived and georgeous combination of thoughtful lyrics and strong front porch acoustic lines, based out of Columbia, SC. I always thought the band was on the verge of busting big into country radio. Think Lady Antebellum meets Union Station at the fishing shack by the river during the day, then gets all gussied up and taken out to the honky tonk for an evening of brown liquor with Charlie Daniels and Marshall Tucker. This band was going places with a full southeastern touring schedule, a constant flow of new music in the hopper, and talented musicianship taboot.
Their demise was unfortunate and sad when Chris Connor (formerly of Sourwood Honey and lead vocalist) passed on due to cancer at the end of ‘07. The guy always had a smile and something positive to say even when you could tell life wasn’t tops for him personally.
Over the years, I got to see Chris play with different bands, from Mobile to Columbia and spend some personal time with him just shooting the shit. I know one thing, everybody felt comfortable around the guy, and he just wanted to share the joy he got from playing music with us.
RIP Chris Connor.
SOL DRIVEN TRAIN - SHOWCASE VIDEO I have to say that when I heard these guys were on the lineup with Outformation for their ‘08-‘09 NYE shows, I wasn’t really that jacked. You see, I like my rock dirty and southern. Yeah, I’m a little biased. From the look of this band of misfits taking the stage I thought I was in more for a circus act, then the tight knit, precise, entertaining and fun performance that I was about to experience. It’s a pretty cool style that they’ve concocted in their musical kitchen. Sometimes you get a little taste of dank Georgia swamp funk, sometimes world beat ala Paul Simon Rhythm of the Saints, a dash of stick - in - your - brain hooks, and even a pinch of children’s nursery rhymes. I urge you to get out and see them. I’m sure they’re playing somewhere near you. By the way, bring your dancing shoes. You’re gonna need ‘em.
Tortured Artist Saint - Dead Confederate
3.12.08 - Stubb’s BBQ, SXSW, Austin, TX
I think I may have experienced history in the making on Friday night. The thought of it still gives me chills a little. I’ve seen my share of shows and “great new” artists, but nothing quite like this. My buddies, all veterans of the southern music scene have been telling me about their friends, Redbelly (now Dead Confederate) for years, and I kind of blew them off. To me they were just another local bar band trying to make it. When we walked in to Headliner’s bar in Columbia, we saw an eclectic mix of young and old, jambanders and emos and indescribables. The opening band Twin Tigers out of Athens, GA. They clearly had their own culture and sound and a lead singer resembling Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins. They were loud and in your face, heavily distorted and feeding back, but still musical and melodic. Throughout Twin Tigers set, we hung out making salutations, and basically just talking shit with the members of Dead Confederate and their moms (yes, their moms - they had made the short trip in from Charlotte to see their boys play. All nice, normal, humble and friendly people taboot.)
After a very short break, Dead Confederate took the stage for what would be one long set. It is clear they are well rehearsed road warrriors. The set came off super smooth with a gradual builds and explosions, weaving through older songs and songs off the new album, The Wrecking Ball. Sometimes they had the raw edge of Nirvana grunge, sometimes it was Pink Floyd psychedelia, but always southern trailer park dirt metal. At times, the combination of Hardy’s vocals and Walker’s slide guitar, almost made me feel scared and slightly uncomfortable, in a good way. I urge you to see them while they are still playing small venues…seriously.
(P.S. In totally unrelated news, I hope some of you had a chance to catch Drive -By Truckers and Ryan Bingham on Austin City Limits Saturday Night. Bingham blew the doors off!)
Driver 8 - R.E.M.
2.10.85 - Zeche Bochum, Germany
You remember your first favorite band? The one that you saw live and finally you just “got it”. Back in high school, I was starting to get really turned on to mostly British bands like The Clash, Psychadelic Furs, The Fixx, etc…etc. I always loved their rawer live sound.
Well it’s also no secret I am a huge fan of the bands that have rolled out of Athens, GA over the years. I could go on forever and ever about this southern live music mecca. And y’all just simply don’t want to hear it. Trust me. There just must be something in the water there.
So that brings me to what was to become my first favorite band. I vivdly remember watching R.E.M. playing Radio Free Europe on Letterman a couple years before this performance, and it may have changed my musical outlook forever. I loved the underproduced sound. I started seeing them play live right around the time of this Rockpalast show, and have seen them a handful of times over the years, and never been let down. Stipe is one of the best front men in the business.
Where the Devil Don’t Stay - Drive-By Truckers 08.27/28.04 40 Watt Club, Athens, GA So I guess by now everyone’s heard that Patterson went down on stage at the Music farm in Charleston last Thursday night. Naturally, speculation was that it was because he saw the bottom of the Jack Daniels bottle, but thankfully he just has pneumonia. The next couple of shows were played without him. Cooley took most of the lead vocals over, with Shonna putting out a strong effort, too. Her songs are really starting to pick up speed. We, at The Butter Room wish you a quick recovery, Pat, so you can get back to rocking our faces off. I want to wish the other half of Southern Heat, SPARKZ, a very Happy Birthday! Not only is he my little brother, but he turned me on to the Truckers. As a matter of fact, I went to my first Truckers show with you, Phatback and crew in Richmond. Ironically, I hear you celebrated his birthday with Jason Isbell this go round. Wish I could’ve been there.
Tightrope - Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble
10.10.89 - Austin City Limits, Austin, Texas
I’ve heard some rumors that Phish has practice this song for debut at Hampton. That may not be the case, but I find it hard to believe Trey could top Stevie’s playing on this. Truly spectacular.
Lunch With Stephen King - Josh Roberts and The Hinges
06.20.08 - Music Farm, Charleston, SC
I have just one thing to say about the Josh Roberts show I went to this past Saturday night. Josh absolutely dominates the telecaster. It is a part of his body.
The Hinges are blowing up all over the Southeast, and filling music halls and clubs everywhere. Columbians (SC, that is) have known about Josh for years, and his former band Captain Easy. The Hinges are cut from a totally different cloth. They are raw and in your face. It is what rock and roll is all about.
