Mr. Richard Smoker - Ween
10.5.96 - The Masquerade, Atlanta, GA
This song is called Mr. Richard Smoker by Ween.
Up All Night - Widespread Panic
12.31.07
Philips Arena, Atlanta, GA
In all my year’s of seeing live music, I only caught one major NYE performance. Two year’s ago my fiance and I made the trek down to Atlanta for two days of sports and music. First, we caught the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Georgia Bulldogs in the Peach Bowl. Then followed it up the next day with a solid Widespread Panic NYE show. I don’t think I could have asked for a better New Year’s combo. Well, I guess the Hokies could have actually won a bowl game for once but sometimes that is too much to ask for.
Here’s a little nugget from that night.
Go Hokies…Beat Cinci!
Ghost - Phish
7.23.97 - Lakewood Amphitheater, Atlanta, GA
If you haven’t heard this Ghost, you’ve been missing out. It finds Phish not only at their peak for with this song, but also in full force in the middle of perhaps their pinnacle summer tour. The funk is oozing fast and hard from the beginning of this one, and quickly morphs into some super smooth, spacey disco goodness. From there it’s just GAME ON, with the hose coming at you full force. This is Phish at its phinest.
Jack-a-Roe - Grateful Dead
5.18.77 - Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA
Here’s another one of my favorites from the famed May ‘77 run. These guys really knew how to package all of their sounds without making it too crowded. I believe the sound crew was just as responsible as the musicians. This recording is a great example. Enjoy!
Water to Wine - The Grapes
10.04.08 - Rehearsal Space, Somewhere in Atlanta, Georgia
I had forgotten how great this band was until Wick’s recent post of The Grapes covering The Dead’s Viola Lee Blues. The Grapes were another one of those bands that had pretty good success following in the success of The Grateful Dead. I remember them rotating dates and opening slots with Widespread Panic a lot in the early days.
Great guitarists, tight jamming and songwriting. Check out this show off archive, particularly set 2. www.archive.org/details/grapes1993-01-15.shnf
I finally bought a video capture device so I can transfer some old VHS bootlegs to the interwebs. I am the first to admit that these videos aren’t perfect quality, but they are worthy enough to be enjoyed. In addition, I don’t believe many of the vids that I have are online.
First up is the classic Halloween ‘96 show by Phish when they cover Remain In Light. Graham and I were at this show, and it was a mind-numbing experience, definitely one of the Top Ten concerts that I have ever been to. I will be posting one song per day from this show until I reach the end of my stash. First up is the amazing jam from Reba.
Many of the songs from this video are clipped, which is unfortunate, but there is still enough prime meat to enjoy. This classic Forbins > Mockingbird is the first example. I did a quick search on YouTube and Google and could not find this anywhere, so hopefully this video will be new to you or one you haven’t seen in years because you had it on VHS as well. :)
As you’ll see, this video has a few cuts in it, but it’s still worth the post. You get a lot of good looks into the first few rows of the crowd here, which is cool to see. God, I wish the boys would bust out The Great Curve. Enjoy!

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
