Phish - Festivalography Pt 3/4
The third installment might be my favorite. The band members talk about playing the largest Millenium concert in the world at Big Cypress, and one of the longest continuous sets of music played by any band (from about 11:45 PM until sunrise, approximately 7 hours), and then flying home that same morning.
This episode also covers the IT festival, my first festival. The band talks about playing the late night jam from atop the air traffic control tower, and how these creative ideas take off during the planning of the festivals. No doubt there will be big some surprises this weekend in Indio!
Carini -> Black Eyed Katy -> Frankenstein - Phish
12.30.97 - Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
In honor of the 2009 throwdown that will inevitably have the Garden buckling under the weight of Gordo’s bombing, we have brought you some dirty, straight up evil funk nasty on Phish Friday. Carini gets up in your grill while the instrumental version of Moma Dance (Black Eyed Katy for you n00bs) gets down to business, even tossing you a Sneakin’ Sally tease before launching into a Frankenstein face fuck that concludes in Fishman dissonance on the vacuum before the big finish.
Evil. Phish.
I’m a sucker for Blues Image covers. Thanks to JB for pointing this nugget out last month.
Mike’s Song - Gordon, Russo and Benevento (GRaB)
12.30.04 - Higher Ground, Burlington, VT
Shortly after Phish called it quits in 2004, Mike Gordon teamed up with The Duo, Marco Benevento (keys) and Joe Russo (drums) to form a unique power trio. Here they tackle Mike’s Song with some serious intensity and a refreshing look at a nearly twenty year old song. I love the way in which the dynamic adds an urgency to this song, which in later years lost a bit of its force within the full band context. I’m excited to hear what new directions Phish takes some of their classic songs. To go back over the past five years and explore what the members of Phish have been doing, check out Hidden Track’s From Coventry To Hampton special.
Carini - Phish
12.30.97 - MSG, NYC NY
Most of you probably know by now that Phish released 12/30/97 on LivePhish.com earlier this week. This show is phenomenal. It was in heavy rotation for me back in the day. Buy it already.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
