Chilly Water > Jack > Chilly Water
Widespread Panic
December 31, 1998 - Fox Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia
Headphones & Snowcones - Umphrey’s McGee
12.31.09 - Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL
A cool little jazzy number from the NYE run, featuring a little Zappa-esque marimba work complements of former drummer Mike Mirro, and horns via Mike “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou (of Jazz Mandolin Project) among others. This tune has only been played one other time, and was a nice New Years treat.
Phish - Festivalography Pt 3/4
The third installment might be my favorite. The band members talk about playing the largest Millenium concert in the world at Big Cypress, and one of the longest continuous sets of music played by any band (from about 11:45 PM until sunrise, approximately 7 hours), and then flying home that same morning.
This episode also covers the IT festival, my first festival. The band talks about playing the late night jam from atop the air traffic control tower, and how these creative ideas take off during the planning of the festivals. No doubt there will be big some surprises this weekend in Indio!
Sand -> Quadrophonic Topplings - Phish
12.31.99 - Big Cypress, Big Cypress, FL
Next Friday The Butter Room will be bringing you live coverage from Indio, CA as Festival 8 kicks off. It will be one of the biggest weekends in recent Phish history, perhaps even pushing aside Hampton, Red Rocks, and The Gorge as the premier shows of 2009. And for the band’s biggest fans, this will be our final exorcism of Coventry demons as we finally get festival vindication. So in honor of 8, here’s some quality Festival Phish!
The Butter Room is powered by Tumblr, a easy to use blogging platform that enables one to follow other Tumblr users. We thank all of our followers on Tumblr for being a part of our community. Some Tumblr users like to post covers on Fridays, so in honor of Tumblr Cover Friday and Phish Fridays on The Butter Room, here is one of the more obscure covers performed by Phish.
One of the few times Phish actually delivered a bust out that everyone expected. This is the final track from the new board track compilation posted over on Hidden Track this week. Hope you enjoyed it!
Amazing Grace > Glory - Umphrey’s McGee (feat. Chicago Mass Choir)
12.31.2008 - Auditorium Theatre, Chicago, IL
A truly amazing (no pun intended) HD clip from Umphrey’s NYE run, featuring the Chicago Mass Choir joining the band on stage for a soulful rendition of the classic hymn interlaced with Glory.
This was the first NYE show I’ve missed of theirs in five years, and it looks like it may have been the best. The band is always known for their New Years surprises, which often feature backing horns, laser light shows, silly covers (Dick In a Box), and even sillier opening bands (i.e. Mini Kiss). This year, they went the classier route, inviting Buddy Guy, Joshua Redman, Koko Taylor, Stanley Jordan, and Jeff Coffin to join them throughout the three night run, and capping it off with this inspiring collaboration that proved a beautiful way to bring in the new year.
Split Open & Melt > Catapult - Phish
12.31.1999 - Seminole Reservation, Big Cypress, FL
In the spirit of the new year, we cap off TBR’s Phish Friday with a pick from Big Cypess. A sublime Split with a hypnotic transition into Catapult is, in my opinion, the highlight of the final set that Phish played last millenium. We all know what followed…

Dick In A Box - Umphrey’s McGee
12.31.2006 - Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL
Living in or near Chicago for most of my life, it’s always fun to take in New Year’s Eve in the Windy City. The past four years I’ve spent my NYE with Umphrey’s in one Chicago location or another. Each year I’ve been treated to wonderful musical guests including Tortoise, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, North Mississippi All-Stars, The Wailers, and Keller Williams.
On this particular New Year’s, the band treated the crowd with a humorous encore referencing Justin Timberlake’s hilarious Saturday Night Live skit of the same name (available here), boxes and all.
I’m still unsure of what my plans are for New Year’s, but if you’re in Chicago and looking for a good New Year’s show, Umphrey’s may hit the spot. Sound Tribe Sector 9 is playing four nights in Atlanta, The Disco Biscuits are playing in NYC, and out in San Francisco Les Claypool will be joining Zappa Plays Zappa while Phil Lesh & Bob Weir join forces for two nights at The Warfield.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
