Friend Of The Devil - Grateful Dead
7.31.83 - County Fairgrounds, Ventura, CA
This is a great, extended version of Friend Of The Devil. The Dead spent the early 80’s revisiting many of their folkier tunes that came out of the late 60’s and early 70’s, often in an accoustic format during the first set of shows. While this is electric, it is still a fine example of the band reinventing themselves in front of a new generation of Dead fans.
In what one can only describe as a Phishmas miracle, Ticketmaster not only added 4-day passes for Phish’s July 30-Aug 2 run at Red Rocks to their site, but made them available for immediate purchase. As I returned from dinner, I sat down at my computer and pulled up my usual collection of sites these days: Tumblr, Twitter, and Phantasy Tour. I’ve been trying to work out a few trades for the June leg of summer tour in hopes of re-securing my Fox Theatre ticket, as well as possibly obtaining an Asheville ticket, and PT has proven quite successful for executing past trades (including all 3 of my Hampton tickets for near face).
Tonight, however, thanks to PT user gooneybird, fellow Butter Room resident Eugene and I will be attending all four nights of the Red Rocks run barring unforseen circumstances. Gooneybird’s “RED ROCKS 4 day passes on tm” thread was sitting at the top of the board, just posted with no replies. Without even opening the thread I rushed to ticketmaster.com and purchased 2 4-day passes. And then I purchased two more. And two more after that.
Whether this was an error or simply a sneaky pre-sale remains to be seen, but Ticketmaster should honor the transactions that went through this evening. I can’t help but think this is good karma coming from listening to the 6.11.94 Red Rocks Set II earlier this evening. So just to reiterate: The Butter Room will be at all four Red Rocks shows and bringing you complete coverage, much like our Hampton coverage two weeks back.

Y’all welcome, Mrs. Hutto!!
Way back when, Indecision was my second favorite band behind the Dead. I was in college, things were loose and carefree, and my only responsibility was to see Indecision or New Potato Caboose on the weekend at New Horizons Café in Richmond. They rotated weekends. Well, Indecision started to blow up all over the southeast, and gave WSP, DMB, From Good Homes, Dillon Fence, etc. opening spots on a regular basis. This show was one of the last I saw before they went on hiatus. They were kind of at their peak musically at this point. There are some true gems in this set, the fan favorite I’m Not From Here, a jazzy Charlemagne, a hot Bu, signature Little Bit, and a fun Chicken Pot.
Anyway, I know this isn’t on the schedule, but I hope you like.
Yours in musical companionship ,

Morning, Freaks!!
Well this one ought to keep you busy for a little while you nurse the nastiness left over from last night’s fun time. Without a doubt ’73 and ’74 are my two favorite years. I’m not going to get to in to the specifics of the songs today, but I will say that if you don’t listen anything else in this show , listen from Eyes>Weather Report in the second set (damn nice structure on this one) and the mesmerizing Truckin’>MLB jam>Spanish Jam in the third set. Jerry’s on and he knows it.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
