After a fun moe. show the night before, Sparky and I had to brush off the cobwebs to see Mike Gordon and his band in the same venue, The Jefferson Theatre. Unfortunately for the band, the venue that holds 750 was about half-full. I’m willing to bet it was the smallest attended show on their tour. Anyways, it did not matter as Mike Gordon, Scott Murawski, Todd Isler, Tom Cleary, and Craig Myers pleased the crowd from the get-go with a head-bopping “Middle of the Road” to open the show. I hope this tune makes a return to the Phish rotation this year after two appearances (both within the same week) last year.
Outside of the opener, I got the biggest charge out of two covers. Maria Muldaur’s “Midnight at the Oasis” put an instant smile on my face. This lounge music classic brought me back to a time when all I had to listen to was my parents’ LP collection, which was riddled with disco, country, and the “soft” hits of the 70s. Later on in the evening, the band covered Radiohead’s “15 Step”. I was secretly hoping for this one after seeing it on their previous setlists. Lead guitarist Scott Murawski handled the vocals quite nicely.
I admit that I have not given Mike Gordon’s solo efforts (or Page and Fishman for that matter) as much of a chance as Trey’s. The last time I saw Mike play without Phish was in 2005 with Leo Kottke. Both then and now, I’ve come away with a new appreciation for Mike’s creativity and arrangements.
It’s too bad this tour was only 8 shows long that primarily focused on the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. While he resumes his day job on June 11th in Chicago, hopefully he can find some more time later in the year for the rest of the country to see his solo ensemble.

My wife and I went and saw Mike’s band at Mishawaka in 2008. The band and Mike were just stellar and overall it was a great show. After the show we were chilling out by the water when we noticed that Mike was hanging out at his merchandise table. We went over to talk to him. When we got there he started staring at my wife really hard to the point where she and I got kind of uncomfortable until he said, “Is that bag of chips open?” He had been staring at an unopened bag of Lay’s potato chips my wife was holding. We said, “Here you go, you can them,” but he responded “No, I just want one.” We said, “Are you sure?” and he said “Yep, just one.” He then instituted that we open the bag and not him because it would make him feel guilty. Then he reached in the bag as dainty as could be and pulled out one chip. Everyone present laughed as he proceeded to eat it with great care. In this short moment we got quit a window into Mike’s quirky but likeable personality.
there were about 8 of us girls camping and seeing the shows at the Gorge. we had a spot and had handmade dresses/bags/patchwork pants for sale and trade. Mike came by and was hanging out for a bit (i think he had an eye for one of the ladies). a guy came by and was going on to Mike about Paul McCartney being the best bassist ever. and on… Mike was listening but not that involved in the conversation, he was talking to us throughout the whole thing. After the fella walked away, someone commented about the random. I said ” yeah- he was a real Wing nut”. Mike chuckled “Wing nut- right”.
1 in a million shot. I won backstage passes from the waterwheel/ Greenpeace table on 12/31/95 one of the most epic shows of all time. I got 4 passes and me, my dad and couple of friends went backstage. I went up to say hi to Mike but, became starstruck and couldn’t say a word. My dad (who is now resting on another plane) struck up a convo with Cactus about his mountain bike which he had been cruising around on that summer. My dad and Mike talked for about 20 minutes about mountain biking and I just stood there in awe. Mike was incredibly nice and chill considering that he must’ve been riding one of the biggest post-show adrenaline rushes of all time. I love me some Mike but, my Dad really came through on that one. Miss you Dad.

One of my favorite Gordon moments happened in Charlottesville on 12/5/09, Mike’s bass dropped out during Golgi, Mike then sang the bass line until his sound was restored. Trey shouted Cactus! a few times and they were all having fun, it was great!
Omni for Hallowen, 98 or so? Mike just sat in a Lazy Boy chair for a few minutes while the rest of the band played. Totally cool.
I have to say my favorite Mike moment is when he took the jam to those uncharted waters really quick on the 9.14.99 AC/DC Bag…
Long Live Mike!

A few friends and I went to see Mike during his fall tour at Mr. Small’s in Millvale, PA. We were in the very front. At the end of his show, he says to the crowd, “If anyone wants to hang out afterward, we’ll be at the merchandise stand.” Staying true to his word, he immediately came out and the crowd began to swarm. The only thing I had was my ticket stub and this ridiculous grasshopper hat. So, when I walked up to him I shook his hand and asked if he would sign my hat. He gave this look like, “Really?” Then his expression changed to a, “well, i’ve signed worse.” He then indulged us in a story about him and Trey in Jones Beach. From this experienced, I learned he is an awesome guy and further confirmed that Phish really cares about their fans.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
