The LineupLong Time Gone - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
6.5.70 - Fillmore East, New York, NY
Here’s a great tune from CSNY’s six-night run in June of 1970 that was later compiled into the live release, Four Way Street. Crosby, Stills & Nash will be touring throughout the summer beginning in June. Neil wrapped up his spring U.S. tour at NOLA Jazz Fest last weekend, and will embark on a tour of Europe beginning May 30th in Barcelona.

Southern Man - U2
12.11.87 - Hampton Coliseum, Hampton VA
U2 has played Hampton Coliseum 5 times, which is more than I would have guessed. Kevin has already highlighted U2’s first performance at Hampton in 1985. Check out “New Year’s Day”, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”. The performance I picked was their second ever at Hampton. Out of the hundred of shows my good friend and fellow Butter Room resident Sparky has attended, this show came in at #1. I had a tough time picking one song from 12-11-87, so I’m sure there will be more posts in the future. I decided to go with U2’s final performance of Neil Young’s “Southern Man”. I have to admit that the original is better, but U2’s version is rare. They only performed it 18 times.
This was the second time ever that Phish played with Neil, both times occurring within two weeks. The first time was at Farm Aid on 10/3/98 when Young came out during the end of “Runaway Jim” into a jam that a Neil Young newsgroup has labeled “Arc”, followed by a 26 minute version of “Down By the River”.
Thank you MountainLaura for another request this week. I thought I would add to it a bit with a rarely played Neil Young cover followed by Simple, which Mr. Miner highlighted this week in his post “Not So Simple”. Check that out while you listen to this unique combo from Summer ‘98.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
