Down with Disease > Mike’s Song > Simple > I am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove - Phish
7.22.97 - Walnut Creek, Raleigh NC
This show is Phish’s next live DVD release, which comes out August 5th. You can pre-order it here.
I was lucky enough to attend it in person in the reserved seating section, thus avoiding the wrath of mother nature as a torrential downpour soaked Walnut Creek that night.
I have two very specific musical memories from that night. This one is my favorite. Listen closely to the DWD > Mike’s segue. It is monumental.
Taste - Phish
7.22.97 - Walnut Creek, Raleigh NC
Over on their mySpace and Facebook sites, Phish has released a mp3 of Taste from the 7.22.97 show, which will be available on DVD August 5th. You can pre-order it here.
Last week, I posted an audience version of DWD > Mike’s > Simple > I am H2O > Weekapaug from this same show, which was my favorite musical moment of the night. The second, and it’s a close second, is this Taste. Walnut Creek was soaked by a hellacious thunderstorm during the first set with the climax occurring during Taste. You can hear the thunder in the background during Page’s solo, and then again towards the end of Trey’s solo. Can’t wait to see this on DVD.
Space Wrangler > Walkin’ - Widespread Panic
4.17.93 - Guilford College, Greensboro NC
“Space Wrangler is something you can listen to again and again. You want to see the band live, to see how they extend it, how they improvise, how they morph it. Businessmen are eager to eviscerate the soul from the music. But, musicians insist on keeping it in. Not listening to others tell them how to do it, but following their own muse. That’s why we’re fans. That’s why we keep going to see them. It doesn’t begin and end with the recorded take, that’s just a jumping off point.”
— Bob Lefsetz, Read Bob’s article about Space Wrangler.
Vultures - Phish
7.22.97 - Walnut Creek, Raleigh NC
Our good friends over at Hidden Track got their hands on a full-length clip of Vultures from Phish’s upcoming Walnut Creek DVD.
We have lots more from Walnut Creek - check out audio versions of Taste and DWD > Mike’s > Simple > I am H2O > Weekapaug.
Help > Slip > Franklin’s Tower - Grateful Dead
10.22.89 - Charlotte Coliseum, Charlotte NC
Nineteen years ago I saw my first Dead show. The show, then and now, wasn’t epic, but there weren’t too many epic shows after ‘85. Not saying it was a bad show, actually one of the best of the 18 I caught between ‘89 and ‘95. Just not up to snuff for many hardcore Deadheads. Back then, I owned three Dead albums: Workingman’s Dead, In the Dark
, and Skeletons
. I knew about 5 songs over the course of the two night run in Charlotte. The whole scene was completely foreign and new, and I guess you could say changed me forever.
This two night Charlotte stand was overshadowed by the Warlocks shows in Hampton two weeks earlier and the Spectrum shows shortly thereafter. The Fall ‘89 tour (along with Spring ‘90) were also used for Without a Net. The “Walkin’ Blues” from the second night of Charlotte (10-23) was placed on the double live album.
The one unique point with this “Help > Slip” is it’s placement in the set list. After a 2nd set “Blow Away” opener, the boys followed with “Samson”, and then broke into “Help”. “Franklin’s Tower” led into “Drumz”. I had no effin’ clue what any of these songs were, but later I found out that it was rather rare for the Dead to bust out “Help > Slip > Franklin’s” in the middle of a second set.
If you want a good laugh, check out my only photo from the 2 night run (I am on the right).
Dancin’ Daze - Paleface
1.5.08 - The Evening Muse, Charlotte NC
Roanoke’s newest, neighborhood culture hub, the Water Heater announces the launch of the Scoper-Harbinger Concert Series to kickoff with a steamy double-header this weekend. The monthly series is slated to open on Friday night with the jamming regaae-soul sounds of Iron Lion. The Harrisonburg, VA based outfit has shared the stage with a slew of Reggae-greats over the years including, The Wailers, Eek A Mouse, and Yellowman. The group is certain to tear open their extensive arsenal of irie beats and rhythms for all to vibe, so don’t miss out.
Saturday night features the power folk-core duo, Paleface. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, the twosome is currently on a full scale US tour behind their ‘08 release, A Different Story. Their sound could be described as danceable, upbeat folk with a quirky lyrical spin. One listen to their music and you find your head bobbing pleasantly while singing along even if you don’t really know the lyrics. The admission for both nights is only $5 for all ages and the proceeds will benefit the Scoper-Harbinger Fund.
The Scoper-Harbinger Fund is the collaborative brainchild of myScoper.com and the Star City Harbinger that was born of a vision to improve the community through development of the arts. The fund is a grassroots, philanthropic non-profit that aims to provide a yearly scholarship for a Roanoke City (Fleming or Patrick Henry High School) student to attend a four-year program in art or design. Eligible students are nominated to receive the scholarship based on excellence in the arts and the first scholarship will be awarded in 2010. The Board will distribute additional funds as available for non-partisan social and environmental causes in the Region.
The Butter Room is giving away 2 tickets to see Paleface this Saturday at The Water Heater! All you have to do is leave the comment “Give me some butter” and you will automatically be entered in our random drawing. The winner will be selected and contacted Thursday afternoon. Best of luck!
Dark Star > Drums/Space > Dark Star > Playin’ Reprise > Black Peter - Grateful Dead
4.1.91 - Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro NC
I caught the Grateful Dead 18 times from 1989 through 1995. I know this was not the best of times to see the Dead, and some Deadheads won’t even listen to any shows during this time period. Fine, be that way, but I enjoyed every minute of those shows and wish I could have kept going to many more. Granted, I know the music was not as good as the years before (especially from ‘93 through ‘95), but I still have lots of great memories both on and off the stage.
The best performance I saw the Dead put on was April Fool’s Day 1991 in Greensboro, NC. It was a two night run (March 31 and April 1), and everyone in my crew but one were shut out of the first night. We still had a great time in the lot, too good of time actually. I believe this might have been the only time I hung out in the lot during a show, and I paid the price too by getting busted for underage drinking. Back in ‘91, the penalty for underage drinking in the state of North Carolina for a 20 year old was only a $10 ticket. :) Even though we were whoopin’ it up outside, the show inside on the 31st wasn’t half bad either. In fact, the “Samson > Eyes” makes an appearance on a Dicks Picks.
April 1, 1991 was one of the most fun days of my life. I think I spent the night in Chapel Hill, but I can’t recall clearly. I do know that we spent most of the day in the lot until show time. Too much partying, but I was young and dumb without a care in the world. We sat lower level by Bruce’s side of the stage (Bruce toured with the Dead after Brent died in 1990 until 1992). Hornsby always brought the best out of Jerry even in the years after his departure from the band. First set was nothing to write home about. “Jack Straw” opener is always nice, along with the “Birdsong” closer, but when I put this show in my “tape deck”, I don’t listen to the first set. All of the highlights are in the second set. In fact, the entire second set is one long highlight. The “China > Rider” opener is the best I ever saw in person, followed by one of my all time favorite performances of “Looks Like Rain”. I am definitely a fan of “Looks Like Rain” post-Donna. Next up was the “Dark Star”. 1991 was the year I *got* Dark Star. Live Dead
burnt a hole in my CD player in ‘91. I couldn’t get enough of it, and I still love that version of “Dark Star” more than any other that I’ve heard since. While the 4-1-91 version can’t be compared to the one on Live Dead, it is a solid Dark Star for the 90s. Both verses were sung, the first before Drums and the second after Space, and then the boys engineered a nice transition into a “Playin’ Reprise” after performing an unfinished “Playin’” the night before. The “Black Peter” following “Playin’” is one of my favorite versions of all time as well.
I can never get enough of this second set. I have probably listened to it 300 times. Besides the performance, set list, and personal connection to the show, the quality of the recording is outstanding to the average ear. Even though I’ve provided the best 50 minutes of the second set right here, you should listen the whole show if you have the chance. I don’t think you will be disappointed, especially for a ‘91 show.

Old Friend - Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks
So, this year marks the 20th anniversary of Warren Haynes’s annual Xmas Jam. The hardest working man in show business jacked the amp up to 11 and blew the doors off the Asheville Civic Center yet again making this one of the most fun events of the southern music season. Basically, it goes down like this. Warren gets together all of his friends in one of the most heady towns in the country, and they jam non-stop for three days (including the xmas prejam). There are day shows, night shows, pre-shows and post shows. Everybody sits in with everybody, and musical goodness oozes like this:

Stash - Phish
11.19.95 - Charlotte Coliseum, Charlotte, NC
This Stash comes from my very first Phish show. I thank brothers SouthernHeat for hooking me up with a resource to find this show after all of these years and Sparkz for getting us there and back, safely.
They really light it up at the end, so be patient.
Down With Disease > Low Rider > Down With Disease - Phish
11.23.97 - Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Winston-Salem NC
With the rumors flying about Phish announcing more tour dates tomorrow, I thought I would highlight a Phish show this week for “Being There”.
Can you ever get enough of Fall ‘97? I sure can’t. After two legendary nights at Hampton (the best Phish Hampton shows in my humble opinion), Sparkz and I traveled southbound to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to close out our three day pre-Thanksgiving Phish weekend. We met fellow Butter Room resident, Curry, and several other college friends who made the short drive from Virginia Tech that day.
The 11/23/97 show definitely gets overshadowed by the Hampton shows the nights before, but it contained some serious tasty treats. Before I get to the music, I’ll share some of my hazy memories of the scene. Lot scene - don’t really remember one at all. I think everyone was arriving late from Hampton, and for good reason. I do recall trying to score tickets to see moe. play an “after show” at Ziggy’s, which is a well-known venue in the South that is within walking distance of the coliseum. Unfortunately, it was sold out. That would have been quite a double bill of music. Inside the venue - Very casual, which Daddy liked. GA seating and get this, the venue had a Gumbo vendor. Of course on any other night, I wouldn’t dare spend cash on Gumbo in a basketball arena in the middle of North Carolina, but 11/23/97 was not any other night. That Gumbo was a delicious pre-game appetizer. We settled in to our seats directly across the stage in the lower level. Perfect location.
In addition to the gumbo, LJWM Coliseum served up a fantastic night of music. The first set was highlighted by Black-Eyed Katy, which was also played at Hampton. Black-Eyed Katy was brand spankin’ new in the Fall of 1997, but I was lucky enough to get it at both Hampton and Winston-Salem. I don’t know if hearing it once before had anything to do with it, but I felt this one was jammed out a bit more than at Hampton. The second set was the heat. A 31 minute Bathtub Gin kicked off the second set. It was tough not to post that as the mp3 from this show, but I promise to post it on Phish Friday. I decided to post the DWD > Low Rider > DWD. I’m a sucker for rarities and the Low Rider came out of nowhere. It was not the musical highlight of the night nor well-rehearsed, but it was a lot of fun and topped off with the end of DWD that was shred to pieces.
In my search of the internets for more 11/23/97 content, I found some old reviews of 11/23/97 on phish.net. Enjoy.
