I Fall In Love Too Easily - Miles Davis
6.11.67 - Salle Pleyel, Paris, France
I’m not sure what could be more appropriate on Valentine’s Day than Miles Davis playing this song in the heart of Paris over forty years ago.

New Planet - Medeski, Martin & Wood
6.17.06 - Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN
Hopefully everyone had an opportunity to lock in their Bonnaroo tickets today. As far as U.S. music festivals go, there’s no larger platform for artists to put on a memorable concert that showcases their primary talents. With Medeski, Martin & Wood the talent lies in their unique ability to morph traditional jazz structures into danceable funk without sacrificing the complexity, clarity, or classiness that often inherits space within the jazz construct.
I’ve seen MMW on the festival circuit countless times over the past five summers, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping to catch them this year. Their professional, yet humble attitude always seems to shine through in the lengths at which they’ll go to put on a memorable show. Likewise, they’re a great starting point for anyone curious about jazz but at a loss of an accessible starting point.
A Love Supreme Pt. 1 (Acknowledgment) - Brandford Marsalis Quartet
Live, 2004
Brandford Marsalis and his quartet cover Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. The entire performance is available on DVD and as a part of Marsalis’ 2002 album Footsteps of our Fathers.
The album is considered to be one of (if not) the best of Coltrane’s illustriuous catalogue and a definitive jazz album. It combines his masterful hard bop sound with the free form stylings that came to define the latter years of his career. The Smithsonian Institute placed a copy of the album’s manuscript in its National Museum of America’s History exhibit, “Treasures of American History.”
All Blues - Miles Davis
2.12.64 - Lincoln Center, New York, NY
This “All Blues” comes from Davis’ “Second Great Quintet,” the last of his accoustic bands. Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock are on keys, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. “All Blues” is a Davis original that debuted on the landmark 1959 album, Kind of Blue, and is played in a standard 12-bar blues scale in 6/8. What always strikes me most about this piece is Carter’s distinctive bobbing bassline that weaves its way in and out of the song. I can only imagine how enjoyably relaxing it would have been to have watched the quintet cooly stomp through this song in a smokey jazz club.
This track is also offered on an official release titled My Funny Valentine (and Four More). Perhaps the band’s best work live is captured from a 1965 performance in Chicago, Cookin’ At The Plugged Nickel.

Today kicks off another new feature here at The Butter Room: The Saturday Swing. Every Saturday we’ll be posting some quality jazz for your enjoyment. Our selections will come from new and old artists alike, living and dead.
Too often jazz is commented on as a dying genre of music, with little patience or understanding from most musc listeners in 2008. However, we still see the value of jazz, the contributions it has made to other genres (see: funk, jambands, progressive rock), and still have faith in the experience provided by live jazz, whether it be in a small club or a large theater.
So keep your eyes and ears pealed for some quality live jazz selections today and on Saturdays in the future

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
