Three Days - Jane’s Addiction
10-11-1990
The City Square, Milan, Italy
Jane’s Addiction made the scene in V.B. right away in 1987. By the time Nothing’s Shocking came out in summer of ‘88 Jane’s had permanent spot in the soundtrack of our lives…the first summer after high school graduation. Jane’s Addiction rocked our worlds straight up. In October of 88 they played the Boathouse, opening up for Iggy Pop. Fast-forward two years into college and Ritual de lo Habitual comes out. By this time Jane’s Addiction was platinum and on the radio and MTV. But starting at track 6 on the album is this masterpiece that would not be played much on the radio or MTV. No time for 10:48 JAMS on those media. Three Days is my all-time favorite Jane’s song.
Hey Jude - Wilson Pickett and the Bee Gees
Sometime in the 70’s where anything, apparently, was possible
Wilson Pickett’s version of “Hey Jude” is one of my top 2 favorite tracks on the Duane Allman Anthology (Aretha’s version of “The Weight” being the other), and so, in honor of cover Friday and utter musical randomness everywhere, I present you with Wilson Pickett, and for some reason, The Bee Gees, performing “Hey Jude.” It still kicks its fair share of booty.
Happy 25th Anniversary, Phish!
The band’s first show is oft debated, and Phish themselves may not even be sure of the debate. Many fans often thought the show in which Thriller was cranked up over the band (to their dismay) was indeed a 1983 Halloween performance. However, there’s no evidence they actually played on that date. Another myth is that 11.3.83 was the first show, but this was due to the 11.3.84 show being mislabeled in circulated recordings.
The first show that definitely has a record was 12.2.83. As per The Mockingbird Foundation, the setlist was:
Set I: Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, Proud Mary, In the Midnight Hour, Squeeze Box, Roadhouse Blues, Happy Birthday
Set II: Scarlet Begonias > Fire
Today kicks off The Butter Room’s Tuesday “Being There” theme, and nicely dovetails with the anniversary of Phish’s first known concert. Over the years hundreds of thousands of people have seen Phish play across the U.S. and abroad. The band has brought incredible joy to so many lives not just through their music, but through the generous community that surrounds Phish both in person and online. Many friendships, online communities (such as our own), and even bands have come to exist because of the inspiration heard and felt through the music of Phish.
Three months from Friday Phish will return to the stage and begin a new chapter, giving young and old fans alike an opportunity to share in that special blend of magic only found at a Phish concert.
Enjoy this half hour retrospective that Phish compiled for their 20th anniversary show in Boston on 12.2.03. Special thanks to Phish and to Andy Gadiel who posted this video on his site today.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
