Vic Chesnutt and Widespread Panic
Dave Schools Basement
It’s a sad day in Panic history. Tonight, we lost a very important family member in Vic Chesnutt. Vic was one of the good ones. I have many personal memories of him with Panic and as a solo musician. Talking to him at shows, the way he would hold a conversation with you, look at you, look away, look at you, look away. He was always very humble about his music, but one thing I will always remember him saying was, I’ve been doing this a long time. Vic, RIP, my friend, your music will live on. I hope you are in a place where there is no pain. m-

Far be it from the heat to ever turn down a challenge, but this time I am going to have to concede to the fine gentlemen of the Chicago TBR. Due to a clusterf*ck of a schedule over the past week, weekend and today, I admit defeat. It sucks, I know. It was such a simple challenge. The potential for Phish Halloween (this year, the Ocho) to be darker, scarier, and dirtier than Panic Halloween. Really, Chicago?…Really? Kids these days?!? Go Home, Hippies.
Just the mere grit from JB’s throat and the dark bottom from a Schools bass line should be enough to stand alone in triumph.
That being said I will take my loss with grace this go round.
ROUND 1: Chitown
(p.s. As time permits through the day today I will do my best to post some video dirt from Panic’s past. Happy Halloween to all!! BOO!!!)
Head’s Up, Y’all!! JoJo’s coming to town.
Missing Cats features the duo of John “JoJo” Hermann, longtime keyboardist for Widespread Panic, and Sherman Ewing,
the New York City-based singer/songwriter who, with acoustic guitar in hand, has toured with Jojo since 2006.
Their collaboration has led to the debut tour of the newly formed Missing Cats as they prepare to enter the studio to record their first album.
With only an acoustic upright piano and acoustic guitar on stage, Hermann and Ewing combine the sounds of New Orleans boogie-woogie
piano with their newly written songs, along with man songs from Hermann’s solo albums with the Smiling Assassins…

06.28.02 - Red Rocks, Morrison, CO
Today marks the anniversary of Mikey Houser’s death. The “silent genius” had a huge impact on my life personally, and I’m sure many of you, too. He was confident, without ego, kind-hearted and genuine. His goal wasn’t to be the frontman lead guitar player for Widespread Panic. He was just the humble guy who sat in a chair, fan blowing in his hair, melting faces with a volume pedal.
This vid is from the the Red Rocks shows in ‘02, which was also my last run with Mikey on lead. He would play only a few more shows with his buddies and pass a couple months later. We all knew Mikey was sick and in pain, but still laying out every inch of his positive energy for us. Watch as JB walks over (around 2:40) and hangs out with his best friend.
I will forever miss the “lingering lead”. R.I.P. dear friend.
Nirvana vs Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit up
Sorry, guys, this has nothing to do with The South or live music greatness. However, it is just pure awesome. I double dog dare you to watch the whole thing. Just having some fun. Sorry, it won’t happen again.
On another note, WSP’s sets from Mile High Festival in Denver this past weekend are hot. I’ve never been a fan of the festival style one - setter show. I always have felt like I’m getting a little ripped off. I love my little setbreak breather and beer break. But, in all honesty, this band has melded with Jimmy “Father Time” Herring and is firing on all cylinders. he’s lightened up a little bit on the fire fingers and is down a little bit in the mix. Still, the MVP right now is Dave Schools. His playing is super fluid and thick like melting drippy wax.
Setlists from the weekend are below. Now that’s just a nasty opener. Nice machine>barstools in reverse on night two (barstools>machine). Way to be crafty.

Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning - Hot Tuna
01.18.86 - Vic Theatre, Chicago, IL
I’ve always wonder what event provokes a “jamband” to play a song in set that they haven’t for 20 years. Last night, 2,193 shows later at The Wharf in Orange Beach, AL, Widespread Panic decides to pull out the old Blind Willie Johnson delta blues spiritual, “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning”. Most obvious reason would be the presence of Luther and Cody Dickinson from opening act North Misssissippi Allstars. Reports from my buddies down there said that the interplay between Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars/Black Crowes) and Jimmy Herring was monumental. Luther’s delta blues chops are some of the best in the business. The rest of the show, in fact, the whole run looks hot!!
There aren’t a whole lot of live footage videos of this Rev. Gary Davis/Blind Willie Johnson tune. In fact, to my knowledge, there ain’t any. However, it used to be a staple in Hot Tuna’s set. This one’s from the famous Vic Theatre in Chi-town. Enjoy.

You be the judge. Touted as the best Bowlegged in Panic history, and possibly one of the best performances on one of the best runs ever by the band…JB oozes on this version. Watch JB right before his rap, if you look closely you see him get “the twitch”, then my friends it’s on. Preach it, baby. He covers it all in this one…the kitty cat, Michael Jackson, the mighty Rev. Al Green, hooking up and the chase.
I knew Michael Jackson when he was just a little man.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
