Heavy Metal Drummer - Jeff Tweedy
1.8.03 - Vic Theatre, Chicago, IL
The Wilco front man has fun with the lyrics to this one from a series of acoustic shows at the Vic.
This is only part of Spiders, but it is such a good vid and I had to post. In addition, I am just getting into Yo La Tengo. There is another vid of this performance on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnJ80lqvy5s
Handshake Drugs - Wilco
6.13.09 - Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN
Wilco delivered one of the strongest performances of the 8th annual Bonnaroo. Playing the main stage during the late afternoon on Saturday, Tweedy and Co. mixed it up with material from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost Is Born, Summerteeth, and their forthcoming album, Wilco (The Album).
The set was perhaps best defined by the song choices and how their lyrics matched up to the festival, time slot (Bull Black Nova’s reference to the setting sun), and world events. Nels Kline delivered some breathtaking guitar work, shredding with precision and careful note selection, While Glen Kotche and Jeff Tweedy locked in for some driving rhythms. For those who were only slightly familiar with the band’s repertoire and long-time fans alike, the full mixture of Americana came through with passion and pride on the nation’s largest stage.
At Least That’s What You Said - Wilco
4.22.06 - William and Mary Hall, Williamsburg, VA
A Ghost is Born
was released on June 22, 2004. In the weeks leading up to the release, I shared an office with a Wilco fan who constantly played the free streaming preview provided on the Wilco website. It stuck with me. I couldn’t stop listening to it. Every track was mesmerizing. It’s one of my favorite albums from this decade.
It wasn’t until 22 months later that I finally caught Wilco live. Last time I had seen them live was September 1997, so long ago I don’t remember anything about the show except that I had a bad case of PDA with my girlfriend (now wife). This time around, we had a decent sized crew descend upon Williamsburg, Virginia to catch Wilco at William & Mary Hall.
Pregame was spent at the delis. After spending the summer of ‘94 in Williamsburg, I grew to really love hanging out at the delis. I even met Bruce Hornsby at Paul’s Deli during the couple months I spent there. The Green Leafe was packed leading up to the show. A great venue for Wilco pregame. As night fell, we walked over to campus to see the show.
William and Mary Hall is the basketball arena for the Tribe. A decent sized arena, no booze served, and the show was GA. When we got there, security was no longer allowing any more people on the floor. So we settled in to some seats and watched from there. For me, the show was great. My appetite for “A Ghost Is Born” had been growing for 22 months and we were served 9 songs from the album. The crowd energy was kind of lame though, especially after experiencing the crowd at Charlottesville the next night. There were a lot of people sitting down the entire show.
I don’t have a favorite track from “A Ghost Is Born”, nor a favorite song from this show. So, I decided to spotlight the first track from the album (from 4/22/06). In addition to this nugget, check out this photo gallery from the show, courtesy of Charles Harris and a couple very short clips below from the show that night.

Spiders (Kidsmoke) - Wilco
5.15.08 - The Pageant, St. Louis, MO
While Wilco often embodies the rather abstract definition of “alt country” in recent years their sound has significantly evolved to the point where I would be remiss to categorize them in any other way than “rock”… because, well, they rock! “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” is one of my favorites from 2004’s A Ghost Is Born, but they’ve added some more spacey and psychedelic stylings to this in their 2008 live show. This is a great example of Wilco going beyond their well-crafted lyrics and All-American sound to provide a deeper live experience.
“I Shall Be Released” - Wilco & Fleet Foxes
8.23.08 - Bend, Oregon
Last month, while on a west coast tour with Fleet Foxes, Wilco invited their opening band to join them for an inspiring rendition of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” At the urging of fans, Wilco has released a free mp3 available for dowload at their site. You can download it from us, or from Wilco. All they ask is that you agree to vote in November. So you should probably download this song, and vote.
Ashes of American Flags - Wilco
07.04.2001 - Grant Park, Chicago
All my lies are only wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
Ashes of American Flags contains some of the most powerful lyrics ever written by Jeff Tweedy, which we have come to expect. I realize this is a rather bleak tune to post for Independence day, but what the hell.
This show was a rather eventful one. It was Jay Bennett’s last. It also appears in the 2002 documentary, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, which chronicles the making of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, where you can observe the tension between Tweedy and Bennett leading up to this show. Bennett ended up leaving the band in August.

The Butter Room was built to spread and discuss live music. The contributors of this site all volunteer their time to provide the content. We do this as a labor of love. Our name, The Butter Room, references an small, low-lit room in a Virginia Tech Fraternity with nothing but a few benches and tables. You go there to get away from all distractions and have a conversation, which is what we want to foster here: a place where you can get away from all the distractions of life to enjoy and discuss live music.
